The Official Charts New Header

A new accolade for the UK video sector to celebrate the biggest films on disc and download is launched. The Official Film Chart goes viral!

Every week, we run down the top ten movies on home entertainment, both here and on our Youtube Channel. We adore home entertainment and love to bring you the biggest titles of the week, just so you can see what is available in case you were unaware. The Official Singles Chart Number 1 award was launched a decade ago. And it seems fitting that the scheme has now been extended to the Official Film Chart too.

The accolade has been launched at the BASE showcase as ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ has secured a landmark UK sales record. The Tom Cruise-starring sequel has recently surpassed the 500,000 digital sales mark in just 11 days. This is a record for a digital release.

THE ANNOUNCEMENT

The Official Charts Company is proud to introduce a new addition to its coveted line of awards, this time celebrating the home entertainment sector with the Official Film Chart Number 1 Award. A decade since the launch of the now-iconic Official Singles Chart Number 1 Award, the Official Film Chart Number 1 Award now arrives for studios, directors, producers, and more to celebrate their Number 1 success on the UK’s Official Film Chart.

From major blockbusters like Top Gun: Maverick and Avengers: Endgame, to seasonal classics like Elf and Hocus Pocus, over 100 titles across a spectrum of audiences and genres have reached the top of the Official Film Chart, being crowned the UK’s biggest home entertainment title of the week on disc and download. This brand new initiative is an opportunity for distributors to celebrate successful campaigns and congratulate their teams, or join forces with talent to drive PR and social engagement around a film’s home entertainment impact.

The award was launched on Tuesday, 13 September at the British Association for Screen Entertainment (BASE) Showcase, when Official Charts Company Commercial Director Becca Monahan presented the first ever award to Oleg Ozoling, Director Digital Distribution at Paramount Pictures for the success of Top Gun: Maverick. Top Gun: Maverick became the fastest-selling EST title of 2022 on its release in August, and surpassed the 500,000 sales mark in just 11 days, an all-time UK record for a digital release.

Tom Cruise plays Capt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick from Paramount Pictures, Skydance, and Jerry Bruckheimer Films.
