This week on The Official Film Chart, Maverick finally gets shot down, and Black Adam makes his debut, but it is Will Ferrell and Elf that take the top spot!
Welcome to The Official Film Chart.
SMILE IS NOW AVAILABLE TO BUY ON THE DIGITAL FORMAT!
One of the most enjoyable horror films of the year has made its debut on digital download to buy this morning. The Paramount Pictures frightener Smile can be in your library for £13.99. The film is a pretty effective chiller that will have you jumping out of your seat at times. Although it does contain some threads that are familiar to us, it is good enough to be worthy of buying (Read our review here.) It isn’t for the whole family to sit down with over the Christmas period. But it is something to watch once the children are tucked up in bed.
THE OFFICIAL CHART
Once again, the chart throws up a few new entries. This week, we have three that pique our interest. As usual, we must lose three titles to make way. And it is the end of the chart road for Top Gun/ Top Gun: Maverick Box Set, Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves, and The Batman. But what is the UK chart-topper this week? Has Maverick made it into double figures as the UK’s number one? Has The Grinch stolen the chart summit? Or is there something else occupying the top spot? Let’s leave the North Pole as we travel to find out.
BUDDY THE ELF RETURNS TO THE TOP SPOT!
Two years after he last topped the UK chart, Will Ferrell and his timeless classic Christmas movie Elf have returned to the top spot. The film has ended Tom Cruise’s domination as the official UK number one title. The film is one that we see every Christmas across the home entertainment sector as well as on TV. The movie opened back in 2003 but remains a firm favorite around the world. Families everywhere sit down together and watch the hilarious and charming antics of Buddy, the human Elf. With great support from the late James Caan, the film is a wonderful time to be had by all. And is deservedly loved by all who witness the fun and charm that Will Ferrell installs in his role.
MAVERICK IS FINALLY SHOT DOWN!
After nine non-consecutive weeks at the top of the chart tree, Tom Cruise and Top Gun: Maverick has been shot down. The film has been the biggest success on home entertainment ever since it hit digital formats a few months back. With the release of the movie onto the physical formats, it gave it a huge boost which has kept it flying high. Now though, eleven days before the big day, it falls back to land in the second spot. The movie is my favorite film of the year. And it isn’t hard to see why. The perfect blend of nostalgia and thrilling aerial photography, coupled with a great story means that everyone who has been waiting for a sequel for thirty-six years got exactly what they wanted.
BLACK ADAM BURSTS INTO THE CHART!
Our first new entry has to settle for the bronze medal position this week. But it is a welcome hello to Dwayne Johnson and Black Adam. The movie has been in the planning for years, with Johnson actively pursuing and pushing to get the film made. Finally, the movie made it into cinemas with a terrific response from critics and audiences around the world. The film is one of the best movies of the year, with lots to enjoy and fall in love with. Johnson has found the role he was born to play. And with the addition of Pierce Brosnan as Dr. Fate, the film is a sheer delight. And as for the mid-credits scene… let’s just say that it had me in tears of joy and fist-smacking my seat in the cinema.
THE GRINCH STEALS FOURTH PLACE!
The animated version of the classic Dr. Suess story, The Grinch, manages to steal two places this week. The film, featuring Benedict Cumberbatch as the voice of the green meanie rises to become the fourth-placed title. Although I still prefer the Jim Carrey Live-Action version, the film is a delight. Classic animation alongside a brilliant vocal performance from Cumberbatch makes the film a must-watch for children of all ages. Everyone will get a kick out of the film, making it another movie that families can get together with and love from start to finish.
A NEW ERA STARTS TO FADE AGAIN!
This week’s top five placings are rounded out by Downton Abbey: A New Era. The film has been a huge success across the entertainment platforms. From its success at the box office and its selling power on home entertainment, fans across the UK have taken the film to their hearts. The second cinematic outing for the cast of the hit ITV drama was warmly received by critics and fans alike, with many saying it not only lives up to the original film, it surpasses it in some ways.
JURASSIC WORLD STARTS TO BECOME EXTINCT!
We begin our tour of the bottom five places with Jurassic World: Dominion, which slips a place to become this week’s sixth-placed title. I’m not going to lie, the film is one of the year’s biggest turkeys. For something that promised so much, it delivered so little. Sadly, I think the franchise is now extinct, thanks to the quality (or lack of) in this saga closing chapter.
ELVIS IS HEADING FOR HEARTBREAK HOTEL!
Despite being nominated for several awards at this year’s Golden Globes, the Baz Luhrmann biopic Elvis loses its swagger as it falls four places to land in seventh place. Austin Butler gives a career-best performance as the king of rock and roll and is deserving of the nomination for Best Actor he received this week.
THE POLAR EXPRESS STEAMS INTO EIGHTH PLACE!
Rising four places to steam into the top ten chart in the eighth place is the brilliant and emotional CGI-Animated film, The Polar Express. The movie, directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Tom Hanks in several roles is the perfect family film for the festive period. I have to admit that I have a soft spot for the film, and I watch it many times over Christmas. It is a timeless classic that everyone can enjoy.
IT IS TIME FOR A MOONAGE DAYDREAM!
Our final new entry into the chart this week lands in the ninth spot. And it is a real welcome to Moonage Daydream. The film is a documentary about the legendary performer, the late, great David Bowie. The film uses previously unreleased footage from Bowie’s personal archives, including live concert footage. It is also the first film to be personally authorized by the late singer’s estate. The documentary takes its title from the song of the same name that was released in 1972. It is a must-see for all Bowie fans and is a brilliant look at the man and his stage persona.
THE FANTASTIC BEASTS ARE ABOUT TO BE EJECTED!
And finally, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore falls three places to hang over the chart exit door as it ends the week in the tenth and final position in the chart.
THE CHART SLEIGH RIDE ENDS!
And that is everything for the top ten this week. With eleven days before we hit the big day, next week’s chart will determine what title will be the Christmas number one. It will be interesting to see who the winner will be. I have my suspicions but I could yet be surprised. You, the buying public hold the fates of the titles in your hands. You will determine what is the 2022 chart-topping film. We will find out next week. So until then…
Whatever you decide, whatever you buy, stay safe, be kind, look after each other, and happy viewing!
