This week on The Official Film Chart, we get a Ticket To Paradise and are watched once more by The Batman, but it is Will Ferrell and Elf that take the Christmas number one honors!

Welcome to The Official Film Chart.

THE OFFICIAL CHART

With four days left to go before the big day, there is still time to grab those last-minute gifts on home entertainment. This week sees one new entry and one re-entry. To make way for this pair, we must bid farewell to ‘Black Adam’, and ‘Moonage Daydream.’ But the question is, what is the official Christmas number title? Has Tom Cruise flown back to take the crown? Has The Grinch stolen the top spot? Or has something else grabbed the glory? Jump aboard Santa’s sleigh as we find out.

Official Film Chart

BUDDY THE ELF TAKES THE CROWN!

He’s done it! Nineteen years after he first hit cinema screens, Will Ferrell and his beloved Christmas movie Elf is the Christmas number one title for 2022. The film has held the top spot for five non-consecutive weeks, two of which have been this year. And it’s not hard to see why. The film is a true bona fide classic of the genre. It is shown everywhere at this time of year, from TV and streaming to cinematic re-releases. It is a staple of Christmas across the country, and families just can’t resist snapping up and enjoying Buddy’s exploits. I admit I’ve watched it around six times this year already, and that will be added to, especially on Christmas Day.

MAVERICK IS IN A HOLDING PATTERN AT NUMBER TWO!

Tom Cruise and his record-breaking sequel Top Gun: Maverick has to settle for staying in second place. The film, thirty-six years in the offing, has smashed chart records ever since it hit the home formats earlier this year. And again, it isn’t hard to see why. Fans of the original film have been clamoring for a sequel ever since 1986, and the sequel delivered in spades. The perfect blend of nostalgia to go alongside the new storyline and characters was made for cinema. The fans lapped it up and new fans embraced it as never before. It is my favorite film of 2022, and I have to say, I saw it in IMAX when it was first released and over twenty times on digital.

THE GRINCH STEALS THE CHRISTMAS THIRD PLACE!

The computer-animated remake of The Grinch has managed to sneak up a place and steal the Christmas bronze medal position. Benedict Cumberbatch voices the green meanie in this enjoyable if flawed family movie. Everyone knows the story by now. For those youngsters that are unaware of or find the Jim Carrey film to be a bit too scary, this is perfect for them. There is nothing here that will upset them or give them nightmares. And is a great introduction to the story. Again, the film appears on TV everywhere over Christmas, and this year is no exception. It too has become a Christmas staple for families across the UK.

THE POLAR EXPRESS STEAMS UP FOUR PLACES!

Anybody would think it’s Christmas! Having more coal added to its fire has seen The Polar Express steam up the chart. The computer-animated movie, starring Tom Hanks has risen four places to land the fourth spot on the chart. Yet again, the 2004 film has become a firm favorite in households across the country and the world. It is a delightful movie that touches the heart of everyone who watches it, from younger viewers to adults who can remember their youthful days. Hanks plays four roles in the film, the main two are the train conductor and Santa himself. With wonderful tunes, a great story, and some incredible life-like effects, the film is deserving of a place in anyone’s home entertainment library.

CLOONEY AND ROBERTS GET A TICKET TO PARADISE!

Our only new entry into the chart this week comes in at number five. And it is a welcome to the top ten charts to George Clooney and Julia Roberts in the romantic comedy Ticket To Paradise. The film has risen by eight places to take its place amongst the elite. The pair star in this rom-com as a divorced couple who put aside their differences to travel to Bali to stop their daughter from repeating their ‘mistakes’ by marrying young. The film won’t win any awards for originality but is a worthy watch all the same. And the scene where the pair play a new version of Beer Pong with an Indonesian spirit instead of beer is hilariously funny. It is light, frothy, harmless fun.

ELVIS ROCKS BACK UP THE CHART!

As we move into the bottom half of the Christmas chart, we find Austin Butler is still rocking out as the king of rock and roll in the biopic Elvis. The film has rebounded up the chart by a single place to take the sixth position. Butler has rightfully been nominated for several awards over the past two weeks and deserves an Oscar Nomination without a doubt. The film isn’t without its faults but is the perfect Christmas gift for the Elvis fan in your life.

THE DINOSAURS DROP AGAIN!

Dropping a place to land the seventh spot is the woeful Jurassic World: Dominion. The film, the climax of twenty-nine years of the franchise manages to go into the Christmas period inside the top ten, despite being, in my own personal opinion, the second biggest turkey of the year at the cinema. But it seems like I’m in the minority as the home audience seems to love it.

THE BATMAN RETURNS ONCE MORE!

After dropping out of the chart last week, Robert Pattinson as The Batman makes a return to the top ten placings. The film, a firm favorite among the DC fans out there, decides to watch over Gotham City and the chart from eighth place.

THE FANTASTIC BEASTS MOVE UP THE CHART!

At number nine, the third film in the Wizarding World franchise, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore manages to move up a place as it climbs from last week’s tenth position.

A NEW ERA IS ALMOST OVER…AGAIN!

And finally, holding up the rest of the festive chart in the tenth and final position, we discover that Downton Abbey: A New Era is in danger of departing us once more. The film has toppled five places this week.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ONE AND ALL!

And that is all there is for this week. Next week, we will see what title will be going into 2023 as our chart champion. All that remains for me to say to you is to wish you all a very Merry Christmas. And as always…

Whatever you decide, whatever you buy, stay safe, be kind, look after each other, and happy viewing!!
