The musical biopic Bob Marley: One Love has had the biggest opening day ever in Jamaica. The film has easily hit the number-one spot in the country. In fact, the film has recorded the biggest Wednesday ever. The biggest weekday ever, the biggest February ever. And the biggest Valentine’s Day ever in the country’s history. Here, in the UK, the film has had the biggest Valentine’s Day opening ever. As well as the biggest musical biopic opening day. The film is guaranteed to hit the top spot in the UK cinema charts over the weekend. (Read our review here.)
In Jamaica, in celebration of Marley’s birthday and the opening of the film, a special mural has been unveiled in Trench Town. Lead Muralist Jordan Harrison along with Anthony Smith. Pamella Chang and Michael Robinson worked tirelessly over 11 days using 22 gallons of paint to bring this mural to life. Jordan Harrison had this to say:
“Ever since I was contacted to do this mural, I had this sense of pride. Thinking about One Love and what Bob represents as an iconic figure, I chose to use the Adinkra symbol which means strength. We also gave each of the portraits a reddish tone which represents unity – so the mural is about ‘Strength in Unity’. Persons in and around the community can see this mural and remember what Trench Town has to offer culturally.
And after people watch the Bob Marley: One Love biopic they can come and see this mural. The team who worked on the mural has been really awesome. There’s a great synergy – you can’t tell who worked on each portrait because it comes together so well. There is a lot of talent and potential here.”

HON. OLIVIA GRANGE, OJ, CD, MP, MINISTER OF CULTURE, GENDER ENTERTAINMENT AND SPORT
“As we commemorate this momentous occasion with reggae royalty taking its rightful place on the world stage in the ‘Bob Marley: One Love’ biopic, we look to the future with a sense of pride and determination. It is my hope that this mural, commissioned by Paramount Pictures, will remind the people of Trench Town of the young man who rose from the inner city to become a global icon, and hopefully, it will inspire generations to strive for more excellence on the World Stage. This is a moment for every Jamaican to reflect on the accomplishments of this little island nation and remember that our contribution can make a difference to the world.”
MARK GOLDING, MP-MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT FOR ST ANDREW SOUTHERN AND LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION
“These murals, some new and others restored, provide powerful iconography at the entrance to the world-famous community of Trench Town. The quality of the artistry is of a very high standard, and the masterful images of these legendary Jamaicans, sons and daughters of the soil from this community, will provide positive inspiration to residents and visitors alike for generations to come.”
MICHAEL ‘LLOYDIE GOOSIE’ ROBINSON-MURALIST, COMMUNITY MEMBER AND FOUNDER OF VILLAGE CULTURAL YARD YOUTH FOUNDATION
“It’s a beauty and joy in the community. This mural shows you everything bout Trench Town – it’s a big welcome. Bob Marley is a legend in the community. A nuff thing we learn from Bob – music, art, football, enjoyment. Me grow up and come see dem man there. I usually sit down over Boys Town and watch Bob Marley play football with Allan ‘Skill’ Cole and other big ballers. I’ve been doing painting a long time. I’ve travelled all over the world and now I’m here getting to put this mural on the wall and it’s great. I’d love to teach other youths from the community and see if I can help bring other youths out of the community like Bob.”
