Apple TV+ is off to the races with a high-stakes new documentary series Cowboy Cartel, premiering globally on August 2nd.
Today, Apple TV+ revealed the trailer for the new four-part documentary series “Cowboy Cartel.” Featuring the extraordinary story of a rookie FBI agent who cracked the case of one of Mexico’s most ruthless cartels, Los Zetas. And the multimillion-dollar money laundering operation they ran through the heart of the American Quarter Horse racing industry. The series will premiere globally on August 2nd on Apple TV+.
ABOUT THE DOCUMENTARY
“Cowboy Cartel” is the unbelievable true story of unlikely hero Scott Lawson, a rookie FBI agent from rural Tennessee. Whose investigation took down the Treviño brothers, the leaders of Los Zetas, one of the most powerful cartels in Mexico. While the Treviños terrorized thousands in their pursuit of power, money and influence, Lawson risked his life on a hunch. Tracking their brother’s racehorse transactions in the United States, infiltrating the deadly cartel and uncovering their international money laundering operations. “Cowboy Cartel” features first-time interviews with FBI agent Scott Lawson, who broke the case. IRS agent Steve Pennington. Irving police officers Steve Junker, Brian Schutt and Kim Williams. Assistant United States Attorney Doug Gardner. Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times journalist Ginger Thompson. And Joe Tone, the author of “Bones: Brothers, Horses, Cartels, and the Borderland Dream,” among many others.
The series is produced for Apple TV+ by Breaklight Pictures, with executive producers Dan Johnstone (“Hillsong: A Megachurch Exposed,” “American Cartel”), Castor Fernandez (“The All-American Cuban Comet,” “Brothers in Exile”). Eric Newman (“Narcos,” “Griselda”), Steve Michaels (“American Cartel”) and Jodi Flynn (“American Cartel”). Johnstone and Fernandez direct the series. “Bones: Brothers, Horses, Cartels, and the Borderland Dream” author Joe Tone serves as consulting producer.

“Cowboy Cartel” joins Apple’s expanding offering of acclaimed nonfiction programming. Including “The Dynasty: New England Patriots,” a new documentary event series about the New England Patriots, from Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s Imagine Documentaries, in association with NFL Films. “Hollywood Con Queen,” featuring the shocking story of one of Hollywood’s biggest scams, from executive producer Chris Smith. “Messi’s World Cup: The Rise of a Legend,” the first official and definitive account of Messi’s sensational career with the Argentina national team and his five FIFA World Cup appearances, including his 2022 win. And “Stephen Curry: Underrated,” the remarkable coming-of-age story of one of the most influential, dynamic and unexpected players in the history of basketball, Stephen Curry, among many others.
Cowboy Cartel will be off to the races when it premieres on Apple TV+ on August 2nd.
