Marvel Studios Deadpool And Wolverine (2024) Review

With Deadpool And Wolverine, Shawn Levy has crafted the ultimate love letter to the Fox universe and delivered a jaw-dropping magnum opus of action, fan service, comedy, and Marvel gold.

When Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, fans were optimistic that Deadpool and Wolverine might finally unite on the big screen. However, their hopes were shattered when Hugh Jackman retired from his Wolverine role. But now, in an unexpected turn of events, Ryan Reynolds successfully persuades Hugh Jackman to return, and both characters find their place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This move has the power to alter the landscape of the Marvel universe forever. With DEADPOOL AND WOLVERINE about to take on the box office, fan expectations for the ultimate wet dream are finally coming to fruition.

But can this dynamic team, guided by director Shawn Levy, do the unthinkable and deliver the biggest Marvel movie event since Avengers Endgame? Or is the expectation too high for even this dream team to overcome?

REVIEW

Marvel fans can sigh in relief because DEADPOOL AND WOLVERINE lives up to its promise. It truly pays homage to these beloved characters and offers everything fans could hope for and then some. However, the film suffers from a wafer-thin plot and an equally wafer-thin villain. But the film makes up for it by delivering what could be considered the quintessential Marvel movie. Shawn Levy has crafted the ultimate love letter to the Fox universe and delivered a jaw-dropping magnum opus of action, fan service, comedy, and Marvel gold. It’s pure, unadulterated brilliance, and Marvel will have to go a long way to top it.

THE PLOT

The biggest issue facing Shawn Levy here is the weight of expectation. Crafting a narrative that fits these huge Marvel personalities is a colossal task, and the director mostly pulls it off. The plot is as simple as it gets, but it needs to be to allow for its plethora of gratuitous cameos, set pieces, easter eggs, and crude humor. This isn’t just a Deadpool or Wolverine movie. This is a roadmap of Marvel magic that takes fans’ dreams and turns them into a reality.

After this, any fans doubting that the studio doesn’t listen to its fanbase can be written off for good. Marvel hears us, Marvel listens to us, and by God, does Marvel act on our wishes. Thankfully, several of the jaw-dropping cameos aren’t blink and you miss them acts of fan service. Instead, the guest stars become co-stars, and the film is all the better for it. The film quickly becomes more of an ensemble piece than one would initially expect. But this all adds to the magic of the film.

THE TVA

The trailers for the film revealed that the Time Variance Authority (TVA) intends to erase Deadpool’s universe, and the movie revolves around this premise. Following the demise of a crucial “Anchor Point” in Deadpool’s universe, his timeline begins to disintegrate and crumble. Instead of allowing the timeline to decay naturally, a renegade faction of the TVA, headed by the malevolent Mr. Paradox, devises a scheme to forcibly extract Deadpool’s universe from the timeline. This would annihilate the universe and everyone within it, including those dear to Deadpool.

So, the Merc with a Mouth, known for his sharp wit, foul language, and penchant for sexual innuendo, embarks on a risky mission to prevent the destruction of his timeline. Realizing he can’t save the world by himself, he seeks the assistance of the ultimate Marvel hero, The Wolverine. Together, the duo find themselves whisked into the Void, the TVA’s trash heap, where the sinister Cassandra Nova, Charles Xavier’s twin sister, rules with an iron grip.

UNLIKELY TEAMMATES

The movie’s tone swiftly changes to an action-packed buddy cop road trip. Deadpool and Wolverine become inseparable, relying on each other for survival while harboring deep-seated animosity. This leads to intense battles in which both characters are evenly matched. Their stubbornness and overconfidence prevent either of them from backing down.

The film delves into Wolverine’s resentment, not only towards Wade Wilson but also towards himself. It poignantly explores his dark past and why he doesn’t see himself as a hero in his timeline. As the story unfolds, Deadpool and Wolverine undergo a transformative journey, rediscovering the true meaning of heroism while striving to rescue Wade’s timeline.

CHARACTERS

In this heroic adventure, a myriad of supporting characters play a crucial role in keeping the story engaging, particularly when the frequent swearing, violence, and bloodshed become excessive. Aaron Stanford’s triumphant return as Pyro is pivotal to the unfolding events, while Tyler Mane’s comeback as Sabretooth sets the stage for a long-awaited rematch with Wolverine. Mane’s lack of screen time doesn’t detract from his impactful involvement in one of the best fights in the film. However, I would have loved to have seen more from their rivalry.

Emma Corrin gives a powerful performance as Cassandra Nova, a significant player in the film. Portraying Charles Xavier’s equally powerful sister, Corrin captivates the audience with her energetic portrayal of the villain role. She skillfully embodies the character, delivering impactful lines with conviction. Although her character’s motives may seem lacking and her screen time limited, her presence is truly remarkable when she finally confronts the other characters. It’s intriguing to witness a member of the Xavier family embrace a dark and twisted path, and this is a standout aspect of her character despite her ultimately disposable nature.

HUGH JACKMAN

In truth, the disposable villains shouldn’t come as a surprise; this film is about Logan and Wade, and both Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds over-deliver here. Jackman, in particular, portrays Wolverine with re-energized vigor, creating one of his best performances to date. As a long-time fan of the character, I’ve been waiting for over twenty years to see the Wolverine of my dreams, and I’m thrilled to say that Jackman has delivered it here. Wolverine is absolutely sublime.

At long last, the character we’ve always wanted to see is here, and he arrives in the MCU with a vengeance. Sure, Logan is the same character we know and love, but with Jackman finally allowed to use the missing elements of his character, Wolverine is all he can be…and it is glorious.

RYAN REYNOLDS

On the other hand, Reynolds takes to the MCU sandbox like a duck to water. The actor is excited about bringing Deadpool into the MCU, and his enthusiasm is evident. Like Jackman, Reynolds feels energized and inspired by his connection with Jackman to give his best performance as Wade Wilson. Despite the use of profanity and brutal violence, his debut in the MCU fits perfectly, and I can’t wait to see where his adventures go next. This marks the debut of many variations of Deadpool, and it’s fantastic to see the classic comics come to life in this way. While most variations only appear briefly, their involvement makes for one of the best sequences ever captured on film.

But the most impactful debut is that of Dogpool. The adorable canine version of Deadpool is an instant hit and will undoubtedly play a key role in future adventures. Wade’s relationship with Dogpool is glorious, and if their relationship becomes the backbone of future stories, then the future for the Merc with a Mouth will be one helluva ride.

EXTRA PRAISE

Fresh from his success on GHOSTBUSTERS AFTERLIFE, Rob Simonsen turns in a solid soundtrack that delivers where it counts. His score, coupled with some smartly curated needle drops, make for a pulse-pounding experience that will be hard to top. From his usage of Alan Silvestri’s iconic theme from The Avengers to some hefty new themes, Simonsen slips into gear and transports us into the comic book world with vigor. On the strength of this showing, I wholeheartedly hope he prolongs his stay in the MCU because this is where he belongs.

VERDICT

Overall, Deadpool and Wolverine is an absolute banger! Shawn Levy’s brilliant film effortlessly catapults Logan and Wade into the MCU and delivers one of the best Marvel movies of the modern era. Sure, the plot is wafer-thin, and the villains are little more than one-dimensional throwaways, but most of the film is a jaw-dropping love letter to the Fox universe and the hopes and dreams of legions of adoring fans.

The film may not be perfect, but with the best version of Wolverine ever committed to film and Deadpool changing the landscape of the MCU forever, it is a fan’s dream. Come for the buddy cop dynamic, and stay for the action because once your jaw hits the floor, it isn’t coming back up until the credits have rolled. Believe me! So pop those adamantium claws, warm up the popcorn, and settle in for the biggest ride of the summer.

The MCU is back, baby! Let’s fu**ing go!
