Sophie Turner has officially been cast as Lara Croft in Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Tomb Raider series for Prime Video.
Last year, we heard that Phoebe Waller-Bridge had been given the green light to develop a new Tomb Raider series for Prime Video. In the months that followed, it was revealed that X-Men‘s Sophie Turner was in talks to play Lara Croft. But since then, news about the project has been rarer than the Ark of the Covenant. Thankfully, all that is about to change.
Today, Prime Video has officially announced the new series, and as expected, Phoebe Waller-Bridge serves as creator, writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner. What’s more, Sophie Turner has officially been cast as Lara Croft, who takes over from previous stars Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander. The series will be overseen by Jonathan Van Tulleken, who will serve as director and executive producer. Chad Hodge joins as co-showrunner and executive producer.
NEW TOMB’S TO RAID
Speaking about the casting, Phoebe Waller-Bridge said, “I’m so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team. It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving. Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artifacts out… Croft is coming…”
Sophie Turner added, “I am thrilled beyond measure, to be playing Lara Croft. She’s such an iconic character, who means so much to so many – and I am giving everything I’ve got. They’re massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands. I can’t wait for you all to see what we have cooking.”
Vernon Sanders, Head of Global Television, Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios, added, “Lara Croft is one of the most recognizable and iconic video game characters of all time. We are thrilled to have the wonderfully talented Sophie Turner bring this character to life who is defined by her courage, strength, and unshakable resolve. Led by the brilliant Phoebe Waller-Bridge, this series will honor the beloved Tomb Raider legacy while delivering fresh adventures to fans worldwide.”
A BOLD NEW DIRECTION
The new Tomb Raider series aims to begin production on January 19, 2026. The series is executive produced by Crystal Dynamics, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Jenny Robins through Wells Street Productions, as well as Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson through Story Kitchen, Michael Scheel, and Legendary Television.
Waller-Bridge believes that with Tomb Raider, she can do something “dangerous and exciting.” She also emphasized the large number of Lara Croft fans that she aims to satisfy. So, the future of our beloved Tomb Raider looks promising, with a new lease on life through Prime Video. The character recently made a triumphant return to Fortnite, featuring a brand-new skin, all-new cosmetics, and even a custom vehicle. Check it out here.
Mark the date in your diary, as a new chapter in the adventures of Lara Croft begins next January.
