“The Girlfriend is a disturbing and enthralling descent into hell for a woman and her boyfriend’s mother. This psychological thriller is a must-watch.”
The Girlfriend is a new series based on Michelle Frances’ novel of the same name. It stars Robin Wright (she’s also a director and executive producer), Olivia Cooke, Waleed Zuaiter, and Laurie Davidson. The 6-episode series releases September 10 on Prime Video.
STORY
The Girlfriend tells the story of Laura (Robin Wright) and Cherry (Olivia Cooke). Laura is a wealthy married woman whose life is seemingly perfect, but everything changes when her son Daniel (Laurie Davidson) introduces her to his Girlfriend Cherry. Their introduction is a tense one, leading Laura to believe Cherry is hiding something while Cherry believes Laura hates her. From there, it’s a descent into hell for both characters as they try to prove their point.
Each episode is divided between the perspectives of Laura and Cherry. This means we see scenes twice from a different point of view. And that’s where it’s intriguing. Indeed, the scenes don’t necessarily play out the same way, and that begins from their very first scene together. Laura behaves a certain way from her point of view, while from Cherry’s point of view, the audience sees Laura behaving differently. This makes things even more exciting because you can never really be sure who is truly reliable. Both characters are deranged in their way. It makes the audience question the characters and their actions. What’s the truth? It’s all a matter of perspective.
Throughout the episodes, the situation keeps escalating between Laura and Cherry. Even when you think things may get better, there’s something one or the other does that sends them back into their downward spiral. It never stops, it gets worse. Undoubtedly, it’s an unhinged rollercoaster with shocking twists. From start to finish, you don’t know what to expect. It’s truly a must-watch. One of the best psychological thrillers in the past few years. Moreover, it’s a crude series that features steamy sex scenes and some embarrassing sexual moments. This adds to the overall shady atmosphere of the series.
CAST
To pull off something as enthralling as this, two talented actresses are required. Robin Wright and Olivia Cooke are these actresses. They both deliver thrilling performances, and they know how to own the screen in their own way. These are Emmy-worthy performances. Cooke and Wright are bewitching. Wright plays the distress of her character and the obsessed mother in such a convincing and intense way. It makes the audience question whether she is mentally insane or not.
