Review | Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard And Soft-The Tour (Live In 3D) (2026)

“Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard And Soft-The Tour (Live In 3D) is a superb spectacle, brilliantly directed and staged, fans will love it.”

Billie Eilish is a cultural phenomenon. Ever since she made her debut with her debut single “Ocean Eyes” back in 2015, she has hardly been off our radar. On top of this, after nine Grammy awards, two Academy awards, nine American Music Awards, and twenty Guinness World Records, she has proven herself. Her recognition extends to eight MTV Video Music Awards and four Brit Awards. Additionally, she earned two Golden Globe Awards. She is undoubtedly one of the world’s biggest stars. Add to the mix her views on almost every subject. The singer actively advocates for causes. In doing so, she demonstrates her strength as a powerful force in the industry.

The singer’s movie, Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard And Soft-The Tour (Live In 3D), opens in cinemas this Friday. The film stars Eilish and features performances from her seventh headlining concert tour, Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (2025), in Manchester. For this film, it is directed by the singer herself alongside the Oscar-winning James Cameron. Thus, can the film reinvent the concert movie, or is it simply a run-of-the-mill offering?

THOUGHTS

The film has been marketed as reinventing the concert experience. I wouldn’t go that far. But what it is an amazing spectacle, brilliantly brought to life by the singer. Additionally, her thoughts and designs for what she wants to do and show her fans shine through throughout the film. Mixing the concert and documentary-style footage, fans and non-fans alike are allowed a glimpse into her world. As a result, we see what she thinks and feels. Her desire to give her fans something special is evident. The amazing way she accomplishes it cannot be underestimated or frowned upon.

The concert itself is a blaze of color, fun, and memorable hit tunes that will have the audience singing along and almost dancing in the aisles. In the film, the artist delivers hit after hit, energizing the crowd and encouraging audience participation. Fans who attended the concerts in Manchester, England, and Phoenix, Arizona, fully immerse themselves in every moment. The documentary style offers a straightforward, behind-the-scenes perspective that draws viewers in. Therefore, it opens our eyes to various things. Listening to Billie Eilish’s thoughts, why she performs the way she does on stage, and her general demeanor, brings the film full circle.

EMOTIONAL

The film shows many members of the audience, both during the concert and before, showing and discussing their feelings for the singer and what she means to them. I haven’t seen fans show this much emotion since the heady days of The Beatles and Elvis Presley. In fact, at times, the film reminded me of Elvis’ 1968 Comeback Special. The crying, the screaming, and the whole feeling are hammered home in these scenes. They can be overwhelming and too much for the audience. At times, we find ourselves thinking, ‘ Why are these people crying so much? Why are they overreacting like this?’

The answer is quite simple. Billie Eilish’s songs and lyrics have touched these people in ways we may not understand. Importantly, her music has affected these people at various times in their personal lives on a deep level. In a way, she speaks to them through her music. Her lyrics perfectly exemplify what stresses they are going through. Whether it be a breakup, a death, depression, etc., her music touches these people, allowing them to speak and publicly display their feelings and emotions. Although this can be overwhelming at times, we understand why these people are crying openly. Some lean on a friend’s shoulder for support. And Billie Eilish completely understands this. She never shies away from reaching out to these people who have come to see her.

THE DIRECTION

The direction by James Cameron and Billie Eilish perfectly captures the concert in a blaze of color, effects, and backstage footage. It is glorious to look at, to experience, and to sit back and enjoy. However, herein lies a problem the film faces later down the line. Its biggest selling point is the 3D aspect of the film. Make no mistake, this brings the film to the audience in a terrific and highly enjoyable way. We see the singer up close and personal, the staging, the musicians on stage, and the whole spectacle magnificently. However, this only applies to the theatrical experience.

When the film hits digital and the disc formats, unless you have a 3D television to experience the film on, and if the film is released on home entertainment in 3D, the film will lose a lot of what it has going for it. It will come across as flat visually without the 3D aspect. What we see in the cinema won’t be replicated on home entertainment. It won’t damage the quality of the film, but it will rob the home audience of the full experience. It NEEDS to be seen in 3D; it deserves that much, and on the biggest screen possible.

VERDICT

Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard And Soft-The Tour (Live In 3D) is a superb spectacle, brilliantly directed and staged; fans will love it. It brings us a concert experience that, while not the redefinition that it claims to be, is one that will live long in the memory. It is an experience that will send home the fans in complete rapture and non-fans home with a wide grin on their faces. Make no mistake, this is event cinema at its finest. It does what it says on the tin; it hits us hard and soft. With an explosive opening before calming down to deliver some quieter, more melancholy tunes, it builds the audience up for the second part of the concert. And this is where Billie Eilish is at her very best. She whips up the attendees into an energetic fury, delivering an electric performance.

EVENT CINEMA

As I said before, this is event cinema. Never before has something like this hit movie screens and dazzled us. Sure, there are other concert movies that we see on the big screen, but this is pure emotion from start to finish. See it for the tunes, watch it, experience the emotion, and be blown away by what you will see on the screen. See it on the biggest screen you can, with the best sound available, and allow yourself to be blown away. It hits us hard to start, soft in the middle, before hitting us even harder as we reach the climax. This is an experience you just can’t miss.
