Columbia Pictures wants to take a ‘Meg’ style approach to the reboot.
Surprisingly, ‘Anaconda‘ is one of Sony’s most lucrative movies. The 1997 monster-hit was one of the vehicles that launched Jennifer Lopez’s acting career and successfully established her as an A-List talent. So, it should come as no surprise that Sony’s Columbia Pictures is actively developing a big-budget reboot.

Instead of a sequel or remake, the studio wants to take a ‘The Meg‘ style approach and apply it to an all-new and all-modern reboot of the giant killer snake actioner. As of press time, there is no producer attached to the project, however, it is being reported that Tomb Raider, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Snow White And The Huntsman writer Evan Daugherty will pen the script.

The studio is aiming to adopt a simple and relatively cheap B-movie concept and turn it into a tentpole summer blockbuster similar it in scope and budget to ‘The Meg‘. The Warner Bros. mega-smash starred Jason Statham and was based on Steve Alten’s stellar novel ‘Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror’. The movie followed a team of scientists as they tackled a colossal prehistoric killer shark which has been accidentally freed from its habitat. Read our review here.

Sony has yet to disclose an expected release date for ‘Anaconda‘, but we can expect production details to begin to filter through in the coming months. Personally, I love a monster movie, but with the ‘Anaconda‘ formula having been diluted down to the direct-to-video format I wouldn’t be surprised if this proposed reboot ends up in the bargain bin. I hope I’m wrong!
