In this Star Wars: The High Republic miniseries, Ty Yorrick, a former Jedi turned monster hunter, hunts a dangerous beast while confronting demons from her past.
It’s time to return to The High Republic era of Star Wars storytelling. But can the latest volume unleash the Force? Let’s find out.
Ty Yorrick used to be a Jedi but left that life behind to make her way in the Universe alone. She now works as a monster hunter and security guard, taking jobs as the Verazeen Stones tell her rather than choosing for herself. When Ty takes a job on the planet Loreth to hunt a monster that ransacked a settlement, things start to get complicated. First, she’s being followed by an unwanted stowaway, Drewen, who wants her to train him, secondly something is off about the job. When Ty finds the monster, she connects with it through the Force and finds out the truth. With the help of Drewen she confronts the real monsters of Loreth.

TY YORRICK
Ty was introduced in the “Rising Storm” and appeared in “Race to Crashpoint Tower“ and briefly in the central High Republic Adventures comic. A former Jedi, she left the Order for previously unknown reasons. Here, we get an adventure with her and a bit about her past and why she left the Order. As Ty climbs the mountain looking for the beast, we see flashbacks to her time as a Padawan when she and a friend climbed a different mountain in search of artifacts infused with the Dark Side that her friend hoped would lead to a better understanding of the Force. She confronts both her internal demons and the demons plaguing the settlement.

WHO’S THE REAL MONSTER?
This story turns the idea of who the monster really is on its head. We assume the “monster” is the beast Ty is hunting that attacked the village. But we, and Ty, are missing a vital piece of information. What provoked the monster to do that? When we find out, we learn the real “monster” is a bit closer to home and entirely human. After all, a wild animal that feels threatened will do anything to protect itself and its family.

VERDICT
Part adventure and part backstory: These four issues are an excellent introduction to her character. You don’t need to have read the novels to read or appreciate this. It’s an excellent choice for young readers who have read Race and want to know more about the mysterious woman we meet there because they don’t need to have read Storm. Drewen is a nice contrast to her; she is less severe and has a nice wide-eyed innocence, but she also plays off her strengths and weaknesses well. Plus, if it had his help, she might not have made it through, proving that sometimes it’s nice to have a friend.
