Maria - Angelina Jolie - Studiocanal - Maria Callas UK Poster

Experience the captivating story of Maria Callas in the upcoming drama Maria, starring Angelina Jolie. Will this film be a new awards season favorite?

StudioCanal has just released a queenly new poster for Pablo Larraín’s Maria. The upcoming biopic delivers a wonderfully poignant interpretation of the final days of renowned soprano Maria Callas and how she became known as La Divina.

The film features Hollywood star Angelina Jolie in the lead role, and early reviews hint that her performance could be a strong awards season contender. Pablo Larraín, who previously directed the acclaimed films Jackie (2016) and Spencer (2021), is at the helm, and the movie seems to have all the elements for success. Along with Jolie, the film stars Kodi Smit-McPhee, Alba Rohrwacher, Pierfrancesco Favino, and Valeria Golino in supporting roles. Check out the glorious new poster below.

THE FILM

Despite the initial excitement surrounding the film, I’m afraid you’ll need to lower your expectations as you head into the theater. Having recently watched it at the BFI London Film Festival, I can confirm that it doesn’t live up to the hype.“Despite its bold ambitions, Maria is an artistic jumble. Angelina Jolie leads well but fails to reach our promised award-winning heights. In the end, the film buckles under its weight of expectations to deliver a serviceable but tired watch.”

In my upcoming review, I will acknowledge the artistry and effort put into making this excessively long yet essential film. However, I won’t be praising it. Although the movie is filled with Maria Callas’ delightful music that has entertained fans for generations, Jolie’s subpar performance and the film’s worn-out concept don’t display enough quality to reach great success. And that was one of my biggest disappointments at LFF. I had high expectations, but the film didn’t deliver.

RELEASE

However, with its various elements, I believe the movie will attract its target audience and make a respectable profit at the box office worldwide. While it may not reach the same level of excellence as Jackie (2016) and Spencer (2021), one must recognize Pablo Larraín’s skill. The final installment of his impactful trilogy might not be the career-defining moment many had anticipated, but it does represent a strong culmination of his work so far. That alone makes it well worth the price of admission.

Maria sings in UK cinemas on January 10th, 2025. What do you think of the new poster? Share your feedback in the comments section below.
