Maria - Angelina Jolie - Studiocanal - Maria Callas UK Poster

The world’s greatest female opera singer will have her voice heard again in the musical biopic, Maria. Watch the official trailer here.

Maria Callas was and still is arguably the greatest female opera singer of all time. Her vocal performances astounded audiences worldwide, making her one of the biggest names. Born in New York City in December 1923, she was equally as famous for her private life as she was for her singing. She famously had an affair with Aristotle Onassis while married to her husband Giovanni Battista Meneghini. Which led to a relationship with the Greek shipping magnate from 1959 to 1968. It was also claimed that she carried on a clandestine affair with Onassis while he was with Jackie Kennedy.

She also suffered severe vocal problems. Early heavy roles led to a weakness in the diaphragm and subsequent difficulty in controlling the upper register. Maria Callas spent her last years living in isolation in Paris before sadly dying from a heart attack in 1977 at the age of 53. Now, her voice will be heard again in the new biopic, Maria. Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie plays the singer in a film that relives and reimagines the final days of her life. The film from StudioCanal will be in UK cinemas in the new year. The official trailer for the film has been released.
