Hot Toys Review | Tech (Star Wars: The Bad Batch)

“The Hot Toys Tech figure will be a good addition to your Bad Batch collection. The headsculpt isn’t the best, but it does a pretty good job translating Tech’s face into a realistic style.”

The Bad Batch Hot Toys collection is finally complete, at least the figures from the team that were announced. If we get technical, it’s still missing Omega, but this one was never announced or even shown at events by Hot Toys.

THE BOX AND ACCESSORIES

The box is your usual Star Wars collectibles box – a black box with a promotional picture of the figure and the Star Wars logo. For figures from The Bad Batch, you get a red colored strip with two al pictures of the figure.

As for the accessories, you get quite a lot with Tech, allowing you to recreate many of his scenes from the series. The display base is your usual interior Star Wars base. It works for almost every figure. Like the other members of The Bad Batch, you can put a piece of printed plastic on it with Tech’s helmet. Then, he has seven hands – two hands to hold the pistols, two relaxed hands, two to hold the accessories, and one gesture hand.

In terms of weapons, he has two DC-17 hand blasters. These are the same ones that are included with most clone figures. He also has the usual thermal detonators – one full and one half. On top of that, he comes with several tools – a torch, a pair of tongs, a welder, and a hammer. All of these can be attached to his belt! Plus, he has a datapad. All these accessories are nicely sculpted. It wouldn’t be Tech without his glasses. These can be inserted into his headsculpt. There is no additional headsculpt with the glasses sculpted on it. Finally, he has his backpack. It’s similar in shape to the ones the other members have, except for the color. As usual, it works with a magnet.

THE FIGURE

Tech is a member of The Bad Batch whose armor differs from the others. First, it’s not full armor; much of his undersuit is visible. He’s wearing something light, as his name indicates he’s a tech guy. Plus, the use of white and red really stands out in the middle of his brothers’ black and red armor.

Overall, Hot Toys has done a great job recreating Tech’s costume. The undersuit is entirely made of fabric. The belt and holsters are made of plastic but like recent figures, the paint used really makes it look like pleather, only the straps contain actual pleather. This is the way. Pleather for the straps allows articulation, which the plastic can’t give while limiting the areas you must worry about for your figure over time. Moreover, the armor part of his arm can be opened to reveal a panel with buttons. As usual with Hot Toys, it’s all about the details.

The helmet is not another head. It has to be put onto the headsculpt. I don’t think it’s the best of ideas. Let’s be honest: if you leave the helmet on for an extended period, there’s no guarantee that the color won’t fade onto the headsculpt. I would have preferred two different heads. Plus, having to install the helmet on the headsculpt can be tricky. What if you end up damaging it? Nevertheless, this helmet is excellent. It’s a unique design, and I’m glad to have it in figure format finally.

THE HEADSCULPT

Recreating Tech’s head was always the most challenging task regarding The Bad Batch. Indeed, he is the one who looks less like Temuera Morrison, and he also has brighter skin. I have to say I’m not disappointed by the final results. Of course, it’s not perfect, but it’s tricky to adapt this head to a realistic look. Nevertheless, I would say the results are pretty good. You have three display styles for Tech – without the glasses, with the glasses, and with the helmet. And no, this one doesn’t feature separate rolling eyeballs.

VERDICT

Adding Tech to your Hot Toys The Bad Batch collection is a fantastic choice! While the headsculpt might not be perfect, it does a great job of capturing Tech’s face in a realistic way.
