The new season promises to continue the voyages of the Starship Enterprise and throw our beloved crew into even more bizarre and death-defying adventures. Picking up from where we left off in the cliffhanger ending of season 2, “Hegemony Part 2” looks set to join instant classics like “The Best of Both Worlds” and deliver a rollercoaster ride of contemporary Trek.

But can this opening salvo in the new season truly hit the ground running and deliver the thrilling conclusion we are all hoping for? Or should the Enterprise reduce speed to impulse and brace for impact?

REVIEW

Fear not, Trek fans, because Strange New Worlds is back with a thrilling opening episode that delivers everything but the kitchen replicator. After a two-year hiatus, one could be forgiven for thinking the cliffhanger ending would have lost some of its momentum. But you’d be dead wrong. The nifty “previously on” segment brings us bang up to speed and reminds us where we last left our beloved shipmates. Pike, Scotty, and many of the survivors of the Gorn invasion have returned to the Enterprise. Unfortunately, La’An, M’Benga, Ortegas, Sam, and the other survivors weren’t as lucky and found themselves captured by the Gorn.

Meanwhile, Pike’s love interest, Captain Batel, wrestles with the infection ravaging her body, leaving Pike to decide whether to stay and fight or retreat and leave his bridge crew behind and at the mercy of the Gorn.

PLOT

With the refresher reigniting the edge-of-your-seat tension, the episode begins at breakneck speed and never looks back. What follows is an episode on two fronts. Whilst La’an (Christina Chong), Ortegas (Melissa Navia) and the surviving crew find themselves fighting for their lives on board one of the Gorn ships, Pike takes the Enterprise in battle against the Gorn fleet. Trek fans craving some traditional space battles will be well catered for here, as the Enterprise charges headlong into a no-win scenario with all phasers blazing.

As the episode progresses, the plot threads that affect the season’s narrative are established, and each crew member faces their own challenges. Anson Mount’s Christopher Pike faces the greatest challenge here. In addition to taking the Enterprise into battle, the fate of his crew and his love interest weigh on the legendary Captain, and soon, he finds himself wrestling between his passions and his responsibilities. This leads to some thrilling moments between Pike and his crew. His ordeal comes full circle when Admiral April makes a decision that will shake him to his core. But like James T. Kirk before him, Pike finds a way to cheat death and side-step his orders from Starfleet’s top brass.

LA’AN, ORTEGAS, AND THE CREW

Thanks to her incarceration, once again, La’an comes face-to-face with the demons from her past. Having La’an trapped aboard a Gorn vessel allows Christina Chong to delve deeper into the character’s trauma and add more depth to the character. Last season, I praised the actor for her emotionally weighted performances, and here she doubles down on that brilliance. Once again, Chong lands the performance with a truly labored effort that deserves commendation. The gravitas she adds to the emotional ordeal hits home at every turn. This is linked to the flashbacks of her sibling, and this trauma will play a significant role in the events of the third season.

Other notable mentions include Martin Quinn, who delivers an impressive performance as Montgomery Scott, and Jess Bush, who surpasses expectations as Nurse Chapel. Like Chong, both actors serve as the emotional anchors of the opening episode, rising to the challenge with remarkable skill. Bush is given more screen time this season, allowing her to add greater depth to her character. She assumes the responsibility of supporting Captain Batel, as the Gorn infestation severely impacts her health. Meanwhile, Scotty takes center stage aboard the Enterprise with his exceptional expertise. Instead of presenting Scotty as a mere replica of his legendary predecessor, Quinn deepens the character, adding more layers to this franchise icon. There is much more to Scotty than meets the eye, and exploring his backstory promises to be an exciting journey this season.

THE FINAL FRONTIER

Finally, I must mention the exceptional special effects in this opening salvo. Space battles have become a staple of the fabric of this franchise, and Strange New Worlds joins the fray with a stellar effort. Watching the Enterprise charge into battle against a fleet of Gorn ships is an absolute joy and harkens back to the pillars of the franchise. The sequence is breathtaking and will effortlessly be regarded as one of the best action sequences in the series to date.  After five episodes, the series appears to be gaining momentum, not just in terms of quality but also in terms of the technical brilliance on display. This season looks set to deliver one of the finest series of contemporary Star Trek to date, and I cannot wait to unpack more.

VERDICT

I had a fantastic time watching the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. While this review focuses on the opening episode, I can confidently say that the first five episodes of the season are sensational. The showrunners have done a great job keeping the formula fresh by taking the narrative in many unexpected and exciting directions, which is commendable. But the brilliance of the season begins with “Hegemony Part 2.”

This opening episode features breathtaking space action, a gripping storyline, and emotionally resonant performances, making it a true gem of Star Trek brilliance. Anson Mount leads the cast with an engaging performance that further solidifies his status as one of the finest captains in Star Trek history. Alongside strong performances from Christina Chong, Jess Bush, and Martin Quinn, this season stands out from its predecessors. The new season not only offers more of what fans love but also embarks on a larger, grander quest that will leave viewers breathless.

Whether you’re a new fan of Star Trek or, like me, someone who has been a lifelong fan of the Original Series, this episode has something for everyone. It offers an unmissable 58 minutes of entertainment for all fans. It’s a delightful experience filled with classic Star Trek elements done exceptionally well. Enjoy!

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 boldly goes where no one has gone before on Paramount+ on July 17.
