THE FILMS

LA GRAZIA

Premiere Date: Wednesday, 27 August 2025 in Sala Grande at the Palazzo del Cinema (Lido di Venezia)

Strand: Opening Film, In Competition

Director: Paolo Sorrentino

Cast: Toni Servillo, Anna Ferzetti and Massimo Venturiello

Mariano De Santis is the President of the Italian Republic.

No connection to any real-life presidents; he is entirely a product of the author’s imagination. A widower and a Catholic, he has a daughter, Dorotea, a legal scholar like himself. As his term draws to a close, amid uneventful days, two final duties arise: deciding on two delicate petitions for a presidential pardon. True moral dilemmas, which become tangled in ways that seem impossible to unravel, with his private life. Driven by doubt, he will have to decide. And, with a deep sense of responsibility, that is exactly what this remarkable Italian President will do.

NO OTHER CHOICE

Premiere Date: TBC

Strand: In Competition

Director: Park Chan-wook

Cast: Lee Byung-hun, Son Ye-jin, Park Hee-soon and Lee Sung-min

Based on Donald E. Westlake’s novel The Ax, the story of ‘No Other Choice’ follows a middle-aged man named Man-su who embarks on a determined job hunt after being unexpectedly fired from the paper company that he worked for 25 years. “If there is no opening for me, I’ll just have to get hired by creating one. I have no other choice.”

ORPHAN

Premiere Date: TBC

Strand: In Competition

Director: László Nemes

Cast: Bojtorján Barabas, Grégory Gadebois, and Andrea Waskovics

1957. In Budapest, after the uprising against the Communist regime, a young Jewish boy, Andor, raised by his mother with idealized tales of his deceased father, has his world turned upside down when a brutish man appears, claiming to be his true father…

FATHER MOTHER SISTER BROTHER

Premiere Date: TBC

Strand: In Competition

Director: Jim Jarmusch

Cast: Tom Waits, Adam Driver, Mayim Bialik, Charlotte Rampling, Cate Blanchett, Vicky Krieps, Sarah Greene, Indya Moore, Luka Sabbat, and Françoise Lebrun

FATHER MOTHER SISTER BROTHER is a feature film, though carefully constructed in the form of a triptych. The three stories all concern the relationships between adult children, their somewhat distant parent (or parents), and each other. Each of the three chapters takes place in the present, and each in a different country.

FATHER is set in the Northeast US, MOTHER in Dublin, Ireland, and SISTER BROTHER in Paris, France. The film is a series of character studies, quiet, observational and non-judgmental –a comedy, but interwoven with threads of melancholy.

The 82nd Venice International Film Festival takes place from 27 August to 6 September
