Donald Westlake’s character, Parker, is one you’ll have seen numerous times before. You just didn’t know it. Westlake famously refused to allow studios to use the name unless a series of films were made. So, instead of Parker, we saw Lee Marvin starring as Walker in Point Blank (based on The Hunter). Michel Constantin as Georges in Pillaged (based on The Score). Anna Karina as Paula Nelson in Made in U.S.A. (partly based on The Jugger). Jim Brown as McClain in The Split. Robert Duvall as Earl Macklin in The Outfit. Peter Coyote as Stone in Slayground, and Mel Gibson as Porter in Payback (the second screen adaptation based on The Hunter).
After Westlake’s death, his widow sold the screen rights to the novel Flashfire. This allowed the character to have his actual name used on screen, finally. Jason Statham was cast as the titular character in Parker. Now, writer and director Shane Black is bringing the character to Prime Video with his movie, Play Dirty. The film isn’t based on one of Westlake’s novels but takes elements from the book series. This movie stars Mark Wahlberg, LaKeith Stanfield, Rosa Salazar, Keegan-Michael Key, Chukwudi Iwuji, Nat Wolff, Thomas Jane and Tony Shalhoub. The trailer for the film has arrived today.
PREMISE
An expert thief rolls out the biggest heist of his life in Play Dirty, an action-packed thriller from director Shane Black. Parker (Mark Wahlberg), along with Grofield (LaKeith Stanfield), Zen (Rosa Salazar) and a skilled crew, stumble onto a score that pits them against the New York mob in this gritty, clever caper.
