Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Maika Monroe, Raúl Castillo and Martin Starr head the cast in the remake of The Hand That Rocks The Cradle. The trailer is here.
Back in 1992, the original version of The Hand That Rocks The Cradle opened in cinemas. The movie starred Annabella Sciorra, Rebecca De Mornay, Matt McCoy, Ernie Hudson, Julianne Moore and Madeline Zima. It was a great psychological thriller that hit the mark for audiences. It racked up a box office take of $140 million worldwide against a budget of $11.9 million. To this day, I still watch the film periodically. I enjoy the performances and the tension, despite already knowing the ending. The film resonated strongly with audiences, leading to a 1993 Bollywood remake titled Khal-Naaikaa (“Lady Villain” or “The Vamp”).
They are remaking the film again. Again titled ‘The Hand That Rocks The Cradle,’ this new version features Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Maika Monroe, Raúl Castillo, and Martin Starr. Hulu will release this version on October 22nd. To get fans excited for the film, the first trailer has been released.
THOUGHTS
The film looks to be an enjoyable horror thriller in the same vein as the original, while also forging its own path. The characters’ names have been changed from the original film. Instead of the Bartel family, their mentally handicapped gardener, Solomon, and the villainous Peyton/Mrs Mott, we have the Morales family and the (potentially villainous) Polly Murphy. Of course, the film will go its own way and its own direction, but essentially, the premise remains almost the same. It remains to be seen if the film can chill the audience as the original did thirty-three years ago.
