MUBI, the global distributor, streaming service, and production company, is excited to reveal the new UK trailer and artwork for BAFTA Award-winner Park Chan-wook’s sharp, darkly comic thriller No Other Choice. The film will hit cinemas across the UK and Ireland on January 23, 2026.
THE CAST
Park Chan-wook directs “No Other Choice.” He is well-known for films like “The Handmaiden” and “Oldboy.” It stars Lee Byung-hun (I Saw the Devil) and Son Ye-jin (The Last Princess) alongside an ensemble cast. The ensemble includes Park Hee-soon (My Name), Lee Sung-min (The Spy Gone North), Yeom Hye-ran (The Glory), Cha Seung-won (Believer), and Yoo Yeon-seok (Mr. Sunshine). Park Chan-wook, Lee Kyoung-mi, Don McKellar, and Jahye Lee wrote the film.
THE PREMISE
Receiving its world premiere at this year’s Venice Film Festival and its UK premiere at the London Film Festival, No Other Choice is based on Donald E. Westlake’s novel The Ax. The story follows a middle-aged man, Man-su, as he actively searches for a new job after losing his position at the paper company where he worked for 25 years. “If there is no opening for me, I’ll just have to get hired by creating one. I have no other choice.”

CRITICAL ACCLAIM
The film has gained widespread critical acclaim, including reviews like:
“A masterful work of cinema. Might well be Park Chan-wook’s masterpiece.” ★★★★★ – Time Out
“A deliriously entertaining masterpiece” ★★★★★ – BBC Culture
“A sensational state-of-the-nation satire” ★★★★ – The Guardian
★★★★ – The Telegraph ★★★★ – The London Standard
We saw the film at the BFI London Film Festival recently, and were blown away by it. Our editor, Phil Roberts, had this to say about the film:
Park Chan-wook’s #NoOtherChoice is a wonderfully well-layered and fun thriller. Often zany and completely off the wall, the film effortlessly captures the stresses of being made redundant while slipping into the realm of outrageous fantasy.
A welcome surprise package. #LFF
Finally, I had this to say about the film:
#NoOtherChoice is a wickedly amusing film that doesn’t take itself too seriously. With emotional and winning performances, a cutting script and great comedy, the film is a winner.
Who knew paper production could be so deadly?!!
