Lars Eidinger Cast as Brainiac in James Gunn's Superman: Man of Tomorrow

Look out, Superman fans, because James Gunn has officially cast Lars Eidinger as Brainiac in Superman: Man of Tomorrow.

With the festive period right around the corner, James Gunn has taken to social media to gift us all an early Christmas present. The director has officially announced that he has cast German actor Lars Eidinger to play Brainiac in the upcoming sequel, Superman: Man of Tomorrow. Gunn shared Eidinger’s casting via his socials with the tag line: “In our worldwide search for Brainiac in Man of Tomorrow, Lars Eidinger rose to the top. Welcome to the DCU, Lars.”

In the fast-tracked sequel to this year’s Superman, the Man of Steel and Lex Luthor will be forced to work together when Brainiac comes to enslave the Earth. The hyper-intelligent supervillain is obsessed with collecting all knowledge in the known universe, but he will get more than he bargained for when he bumps into the last son of Krypton and his arch nemesis.

THE STORY

A few weeks ago, the director stopped by to chat with Howard Stern and offered insight into his vision for the sequel. He said, “It’s a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat,” he said. “It’s more complicated than that but. It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie. I relate to the character of Lex, sadly. I really wanted to create something extraordinary with the two of them. I just love the script so much.”

HEROES AND VILLAINS

It’s truly exciting to watch the new DC Universe come to life so quickly. Since Superman made his debut this July, many of us expected a sequel might be just around the corner. But Gunn’s universe is already casting for that next adventure, even as Supergirl is gearing up for her debut next summer. Bringing Brainiac into a live-action Superman movie is also a very special milestone for the DC Universe. Though Brainiac has been part of Superman’s story for many years, this will be his first time appearing in a live-action film, and we can look forward to James Gunn possibly pushing boundaries with his first appearance.

So, we should all get ready to welcome Lars Eidinger to the DC Universe. The German actor recently starred alongside George Clooney in Jay Kelly. Although his role as a German cyclist in the film was limited to being battered by the star in a hilarious sequence, his impact on the film was impressive, so fans will be looking forward to seeing him transform into one of DC’s mightiest villains.

RELEASE

The quick launch of DC really shows Warner Bros’ trust in James Gunn’s fresh DC Universe, which is already kicking off with great momentum. With Craig Gillespie currently fine-tuning his Supergirl movie and James Watkins shooting Clayface in the UK, the revamped DCU is progressing faster than a speeding bullet.

Sadly, it appears Alan Ritchson has been ruled out of playing Batman; however, the actor remains committed to joining Gunn’s new universe in some capacity. But with the Superman Saga officially underway and the Dark Knight waiting in the wings, the revamped DCU appears to have established solid foundations. And long may it continue.

Superman: Man of Tomorrow will release in cinemas on July 9, 2027.
