Notch Your Arrows And Take Aim At The Official Trailer For The Death Of Robin Hood

The legend was a lie. The official trailer for Michael Sarnoski’s The Death Of Robin Hood unleashes Hugh Jackman as the notorious outlaw.

Over the years, there have been many incarnations of the legendary Robin Hood. From the legendary swashbuckling version of Errol Flynn and the brilliance of Richard Todd, through to the animated Disney version. Even Kevin Costner, Russell Crowe, and Taron Egerton featured in versions. The character has thrilled millions around the globe with his “robbing the rich to give to the poor” morality. The problem is, no one can actually prove he was a real person. His legend has been changed over the years. It transitioned from English folklore depicting him as a hero. Bandits then actually used the name. Whether he was a real person or not, there’s no denying that to the world, he was a legendary, heroic outlaw.

That legendary status could be under threat. Heading towards cinemas later this year is The Death Of Robin Hood. This new movie is more of a thriller than an action-adventure. It looks to be a more serious character study of the outlaw. It certainly looks to be a more adult interpretation of the legend, one that is violent. Moreover, it portrays the hero in a completely different light. The film features Hugh Jackman as Robin Hood. There is support from Jodie Comer, Bill SkarsgÃ¥rd, Murray Bartlett, and Noah Jupe. SkarsgÃ¥rd plays Little John. In contrast, the other stars’ characters have yet to be revealed. We can guess that Jodie Comer will portray Maid Marion, but that is unconfirmed. Written and directed by Michael Sarnoski, based on the legend of “Robin Hood’s Death”. The official trailer for the film has arrived from Sherwood Forest.

THE PREMISE

Grappling with his past after a life of crime and murder, Robin Hood finds himself gravely injured. This occurs after a battle he thought would be his last. In the hands of a mysterious woman, he is offered a chance at salvation.

TACKLED BEFORE

Although the film was funny as well as serious, the tale has been tackled before in 1976. The romantic adventure movie, Robin and Marian, also addressed it. In that film, Robin Hood was portrayed by Sean Connery with Audrey Hepburn as Marian/Mother Jennet and Robert Shaw as the Sheriff of Nottingham. The climax saw Hood refuse to surrender to the Sheriff and kill him with the last of his strength. However, the film didn’t have a happy ending. With Hood unable to recover from his injuries, Marion poisoned them both as an act of mercy. The film ended with Hood firing an arrow through the window and asking Little John to bury both him and Marion where it lands.

Could the film follow a similar path to the 1976 movie? That film was based on an ancient story (found in A Gest of Robyn Hode) that depicts his death at the hands of a prioress, who was a relative. However, the film turned the legend on its head by making Marian the prioress and making it an act of love, not betrayal. If this is true, we will see a modern version of the story. The 1976 film had the same title as the upcoming version, but was forced to change it to be more marketable. Even if it isn’t telling the same story, the film looks set to thrill and enchant audiences across the globe.
