“Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials is a captivating detective story where some twists are predictable while others land with surprise, but the real draw lies in how events unfold and the motives behind them.”
Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials is a 3-episode series based on the Agatha Christie novel of the same name. It stars Mia McKenna-Bruce, Helena Bonham Carter, and Martin Freeman. The series releases today on Netflix.
STORY
Seven Dials is a detective story set in the 1920s in England. When Gerry Wade (Corey Mylchreest) is found dead after a house party, the inquisitive Lady Eileen ‘Bundle’ Brent (Mia McKenna-Bruce) tries to unravel the mysterious plot. The story is divided into 3 episodes of around 50 minutes each. It’s an odd choice to have opted for this format since the episodes aren’t that long. It would have made sense if each episode were an hour and a half, but here they’re all about an hour. So it could easily have been edited into a 150-minute film. In fact, a 140-minute television film was released in 1981 based on the same novel. Clearly, it’s not a story that was long enough to be treated as a series; a film was more suited.

Nevertheless, it doesn’t diminish the enjoyment of watching this plot unfold on screen. Plus, you can binge-watch this series quite easily. It’s actually a captivating detective story. After all, it’s based on an Agatha Christie novel, so you know from the start it’s going to be good. It’s a murder investigation, so there are obviously suspects and plot twists. Some of the twists can be guessed as the story unfolds, while others are more surprising. But it’s how it played out and the motives that’s more compelling than the twists themselves. As the story progresses, additional layers emerge, deepening the plot and heightening its intrigue. It’s a story that’s more complex than just the murder of Wade; it goes far beyond that. This investigation is a life-changing event for Bundle.

CAST
Mia McKenna-Bruce proves to be a great and compelling lead. Helena Bonham Carter is perfectly suited to play this odd character, that’s totally in her area of expertise. On top of that, Martin Freeman is excellent as the superintendent. He knows how to be serious while still bringing that little touch of fun to his performance.

VISUALS
Furthermore, the series offers a richly immersive vision of 1920s England. Indeed, it recreates this era with remarkable care and beauty. From the meticulously tailored costumes and gleaming period automobiles to the evocative streets, stately buildings, and countryside scenery, every frame feels steeped in authenticity. The atmosphere captures the spirit of how England was at the time. Obviously, they used CGI in wide shots to recreate parts of London to restore historical details, but the CGI blends seamlessly into the production, enhancing rather than distracting from it. The result is a world that feels genuinely lived-in and authentic to its time.
VERDICT
Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials is a captivating detective story in which some twists are predictable while others land with a surprise, but the real draw lies in how events unfold and the motives behind them. As the narrative progresses, new layers deepen the plot and heighten its intrigue. Mia McKenna-Bruce anchors it all as a compelling and assured lead.
