A new limited series in the mutant universe has spawned! It’s time to explore Marvel’s Magik and Colossus. The siblings Piotr and Illyana Rasputin (better known as Colossus and Magik, respectively) have returned to their home country of Russia to discover that monsters are roaming the countryside. METAL MUTANT

For those unfamiliar with the characters, here are some fundamentals. Colossus first appeared in Giant-Size X-Men #1 in 1975. He was created by Len Wein and Dave Cockrum. He can transform his skin into a nearly indestructible form of organic steel, protecting him from most types of damage. While in this state, he also possesses superhuman strength and stamina. Magik also first appeared in Giant-Size X-Men #1, however, only as a young child. While she was still a child, she was kidnapped and trapped in the extradimensional Limbo. While there, she became a powerful sorceress. Also, while there, her mutant power manifested itself. She can teleport using stepping disks.

The story takes place in the aftermath of Krakoa’s fall. Colossus, having killed his brother, Mikhail, previously, has gone back to Russia to, well, let’s face it, he is there to mope. He is there to get his mind off his actions and try to help during harvest time. His sister Magik shows up, trying to get him to come to Alaska with her, where she is part of Cyclops’ team of X-Men. He refuses, so she decides to try to help him through his mental state, and they both wind up fighting off magic monsters and more…

SIBLING STORIES

I was a fan of the 2025 Magik series. I liked the writing. I felt like Ashley did her homework correctly on the character. So I’m glad to see her back writing the character again. She does a good job of the dynamic between the two siblings. You get a good sense of a real relationship between the two. There is love, but there is also frustration. The only downside I can think of about this writing is that this book would not be a good entry point for new readers of the characters. But, to be fair, I don’t think that is the point here. The artwork by Peralta is good. It is a good showcase of his pencil work, and he portrays the characters well.

VERDICT

Overall, Magik and Colossus #1 is a nice start to this series, and I’m excited to see where it goes, especially with that shadowy figure that is not named at the end. Good way to end the first issue. If you are a fan of Magik or Colossus, or a fan of X-Men in general, I highly suggest you pick it up.
