The acclaimed and award-Winning movie by Kleber Mendonça Filho, The Secret Agent, starring Wagner Moura, is coming to MUBI this April.
MUBI, the global distributor, streaming service, and production company, is proud to announce that the award-winning political crime-thriller The Secret Agent is from acclaimed Brazilian filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho (Bacurau, Aquarius). In addition, it will stream exclusively on MUBI in the UK and Ireland. Viewers can watch it from 17 April 2026.
With 4 Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor (Moura), Best Casting and Best International Feature Film, 2 BAFTA nominations for Best Film Not in the English Language and Best Original Screenplay, and 2 Golden Globe wins for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama (Moura) and Best Foreign Language Film, Kleber Mendonça Filho’s The Secret Agent is a gripping, mischievous political thriller that entertains as much as it provokes. Moreover, it is set amid the vibrant cultural landscape of 1970s Brazil. The film immerses audiences in the nation’s charged atmosphere. It also captures the grandeur of the period’s golden-age cinema through superb cinematography and a bold, era-defining soundtrack.
THE PREMISE
Marcelo (Wagner Moura) is a university professor and father fleeing a mysterious past who travels from São Paulo to the seaside city of Recife during Carnival in hopes of reuniting with his son. Swept into a vibrant world of color, noise, and unforgettable characters, Marcelo quickly realizes that even in his new refuge, watchful neighbors are tailing and spying on him. As the city’s sights and sounds intensify, so too does the sense that Recife’s web of secrets – and the tentacles of corruption reaching toward him – may leave him with no escape.
The Secret Agent stands as a landmark achievement in the rebirth of Brazilian cinema – heralding a new chapter on the world stage.

We saw the film at the BFI London Film Festival and were impressed with what we saw. Our editor, Phil Roberts, had this to say about the film:
“Kleber Mendonça Filho’s #TheSecretAgent is a bold and enticing slice of cinema. Wagner Moura expertly leads a great ensemble cast through the web of corruption in Brazil.
Although the finale fell flat for me, the charming thriller is a worthy addition to the #LFF watchlist.”
THE CAST
Starring Wagner Moura (Narcos, Civil War), Maria Fernanda Cândido (Vermelho Monet, The Traitor), and Gabriel Leone (Eduardo and Monica, Verdades Secretas), the film premiered in the UK at the 2025 BFI London Film Festival and had its world premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. At Cannes, Moura took home the Best Actor Award, while Mendonça Filho won Best Director. The film also secured the Art House Cinema Award and the FIPRESCI Prize for Best Film.
The Secret Agent will be available exclusively on MUBI on April 17th.
