Ahead of the premiere of the new HBO Max series based on the best-selling novels, Darcie takes a look at the new Hogwarts robes from Harry Potter.
We have our first look at the new Hogwarts robes! We finally got a glimpse at the uniforms in the first trailer and the images released by Variety. The Hogwarts uniforms are a large part of the costuming in the Harry Potter universe. After all, they are worn by all of the students for the majority of their screen time. This is usual for UK schools. The film robes are a favourite piece of merch that fans can get their hands on at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter lands at Universal theme parks in America and Japan. In addition, they can be found at the Warner Brothers Studio Tours in the UK, Japan, and America. So what do the robes for the new HBO Harry Potter show look like?
HOLLY WADDINGTON
We’ve only glimpsed the new robes so far, but what we have seen looks promising. Designing for the new generation of Hogwarts actors is Holly Waddington, her previous work includes Poor Things (2023) and Lady Macbeth (2016), as well as War Horse (2011) and The Man from U.N.C.L.E (2015), where she worked as assistant costume designer. Waddington was the first creative hired for the show, showcasing her talent and setting the stage for the wonderful designs we can expect over the next seven seasons of Harry Potter.
THE GOLD TRIO
The most noticeable change to the uniforms is the robe. From the quick look we have seen of the gold trio: Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton. The robe appears to be burgundy, unlike the black robe with the house-colour piping detail in the films. The Burgundy shade is brighter on Ron’s robe, which could be because it’s a hand-me-down. I would love this to be the case! Â We have only seen a clear look at the trio, so it is hard to tell if the robes will be different for each house, with hues of Green, Blue and Yellow. But I am excited to see how each house will be defined in the show.

A NEW DEFINING STYLE
Arabella Stanton’s Hermione is seen in a dress, layered over a crisp white shirt. The dress looks fantastic, held at the waist with a burgundy belt and then falling to the ankle in pleats. It’s elegant and reflective of recent school uniform trends. Recently, plain grey skirts have transitioned to pleated skirts. Beyond the dress, Dominic McLaughlin’s Harry and Alastair Stout’s Ron can be seen clearly in their robes and what looks like black trousers and jumpers. The shirts have large starched collars. However, these are not in a comically large way but in a polished way. The Gryffindor ties look to be Burgundy with a small golden stripe bordered by black.

ROBES OF EVIL
We also glimpse Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy in the trailer and the Variety images. Although we only see a quick look at the uniform, we see the signature Slytherin Green on the tie and on the edging of his black jumper. We also got to see the yellow herbology aprons and the Quidditch uniforms, both of which look so good!

I cannot wait to see more of the Hogwarts uniforms, which I am sure will be a hit with fans.
