Get Ready For The Kiss Of The Spider Woman In Cinemas Soon

In 1985, the film adaptation of Manuel Puig’s 1976 novel, *Kiss of the Spider Woman*, hit theaters. Directed by Héctor Babenco, the film featured performances by William Hurt, Raúl Juliá, and Sônia Braga. A box office success, the film led to a host of awards and nominations. Furthermore, it won Hurt an Oscar and a BAFTA for his role as Luis Molina. Set in a Brazilian prison during the military dictatorship, the film centered on a dialogue between two very different cellmates. These were a hardened leftist revolutionary (Julia) and an apolitical gay man (Hurt). The story utilizes metafictional and film-within-a-film elements. In particular, the latter regales the former with retellings of an old movie, whose themes mirror those of the characters.

In 1992, Terrence McNally adapted the novel and film into a stage musical. Now, it has been adapted for the big screen. The new version of Kiss Of The Spider Woman opens in cinemas on April 17th. This time around, the film stars Diego Luna, Tonatiuh, and Jennifer Lopez. Sony Pictures is behind the release. Today, they have released the official trailer and poster for the film.
