What's Opening In Cinemas This Week: Get Ready To Be California Schemin' With You, Me & Tuscany With An Undertone!

James McAvoy’s directorial debut, California Schemin’, You, Me & Tuscany, and Undertone are the big releases this week in cinemas.

Get ready for another exciting week at the cinema with some big new releases. Leading the line is the directorial debut from actor James McAvoy, the hilarious California Schemin’. Halle Bailey and Regé-Jean Page enjoy a fling in the romantic comedy You, Me & Tuscany, while horror fans are catered for with the release of the spooky Undertone. With two other movies opening this week, there’s plenty of cinematic entertainment on offer.

CALIFORNIA SCHEMIN’

Studio Canal-Released Friday 10th April

Synopsis: Two Scottish lads from Dundee conned the music industry by pretending to be an established Californian rap duo, bagging a record deal and appearing on MTV until their scam unraveled.

Cast: Samuel Bottomley, Séamus McLean Ross

Director: James McAvoy

Cert: 15

Ok, I have a confession to make. I actually saw the film back in January at a special screening where James McAvoy himself introduced the film. I can say that the film is a winner, one that will have the audience in fits of laughter. My thoughts on the film are:

“James McAvoy’s California Schemin’ is a delightful comedy drama, based on a true story that has the audience laughing at the antics on screen as well as hooked as they watch a friendship end in front of their eyes.

The cast is superb, the music is good, and McAvoy’s direction is sublime.

Don’t scheme about going to see it, it is a brilliant time at the cinema!”

FATHER MOTHER SISTER BROTHER

Mubi-Released Friday 10th April

Synopsis: Estranged siblings reunite after years apart, forced to confront unresolved tensions and reevaluate their strained relationships with their emotionally distant parents.

Cast: Tom Waits, Adam Driver, Mayim Bialik

Director: Jim Jarmusch

Cert: 15

YOU, ME & TUSCANY

Universal Pictures-Released Friday 10th April

Synopsis: Anna impulsively jets off to Tuscany, Italy, to stay at a stranger’s villa without permission. Caught inside the house by the man’s mother, she convinces the woman that she’s his fiancée. That little lie soon becomes a big problem when Anna develops a growing attraction to the stranger’s handsome cousin.

Cast: Halle Bailey and Regé-Jean Page

Director: Kat Coiro

Cert: 12A

ALSO RELEASED THIS WEEK

THE STRANGER

Curzon-Release date: Friday 10th April

Cert: 15

We saw the film a few weeks back and enjoyed it. Our editor, Phil Roberts, had this to say about the film:

“François Ozon’s #TheStranger is a baffling but addictive watch. The B&W setting conjures memories of a bygone era, with a plot confronting us with a detached character study.

Benjamin Voisin is truly mesmerizing, weaving a web of emotionless intrigue. An intoxicating watch!”

UNDERTONE

Vertigo Releasing-Release date: Friday 10th April

Cert: 15

We saw the film recently. Sadly, despite some great critical notices, we didn’t feel blown away by the film. Phil Roberts said:

“Ian Tuason’s #Undertone is a bold and admirable concept that could, eventually, produce greatness.

However, aside from Nina Kiri’s strong performance and some expertly crafted, eerie soundscapes, it offers little more than an underwhelming horror. It’s a big swing that stutters.”

While I had this to say about the film:

“Somewhere within #Undertone is a great movie waiting to emerge.

Sadly, it never does.

Despite a terrific leading performance from Nina Kiri, the film isn’t as scary as it likes to think and comes across as plodding.

For something that promises much, it delivers so little.”
