Holy Schwartz! Spaceballs: The New One is the title for the sequel revealed by Mel Brooks and the star-studded cast. No really!
Holy Schwartz! The cast of Spaceballs 2 took to the stage at CinemaCon to help Mel Brooks introduce the new titles for his long-awaited sequel. Hollywood legend Rick Moranis received a standing ovation when he walked onstage with original cast members Bill Pullman and Daphne Zuniga, along with new stars Lewis Pullman and Josh Gad. Together, they joined Mel Brooks, who appeared on-screen in a pre-recorded message to confirm the film’s new title.
Years ago, Brooks hinted that his sequel would always be titled Spaceballs 2: The Search For More Money. But all that is about to change, because his new sequel is officially titled…SPACEBALLS: THE NEW ONE! No Really! Want to hear it from the horse’s mouth? Click play on Mel Brooks’ message below.
THE FILM
Sadly, little is known about the film’s plot. However, it comes as no surprise that Brooks will once again parody Star Wars in the sequel, especially the sequel trilogy. After the title reveal, some extremely rare footage was shown to the CinemaCon crowds. It featured sequences of Lewis Pullman as the swashbuckling hero Starburst, Lone Starr, and Vespa’s son. The footage also introduced franchise newcomer Keke Palmer, who appears to be playing a parody of Daisy Ridley’s Rey. Finally, footage of Rick Moranis’ Dark Helmet was shown, revealing the actor hasn’t lost his signature touch after years of retirement.
THE CAST
In front of the camera, original stars Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, and Rick Moranis will all return to reprise their roles. And most recently, it was confirmed that George Wyner has signed on to return as Colonel Sandurz. New additions to the cast include Anthony Carrigan, Keke Palmer, and Josh Gad. Rounding out the cast is Bill’s son, Lewis Pullman, who stars as Starburst, Lone Starr, and Vespa’s son.
Josh Greenbaum, known for directing “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar,” is set to direct the new “Spaceballs” movie. The script is written by Mel Brooks, Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Josh Gad, who is also slated to star in and produce the film alongside Brian Grazer, Jeb Brody, and Brooks from Imagine Entertainment, as well as Greenbaum. The executive producers include Kevin Salter, Adam Merims, Samit, and Hernandez.
THERE GOES THE PLANET!
The original Spaceballs was a rare gem, a truly hilarious parody made all the more sensational by the brilliance of Mel Brooks. I am delighted to see the legendary writer and director returning for the sequel. Already, Josh Gad has pulled a miracle out of the bag by bringing some of the original cast back into the fold—especially Rick Moranis. Rick has been retired for decades and has refused to return to other projects, such as Ghostbusters: Afterlife. So, his return is a landmark event in itself. Together with the OG cast and some exciting new additions, the film is on course to become 2027’s most anticipated film, and we will be among the first in line to see it.
RELEASE
You’ve got to hand it to Mel Brooks; he certainly knows how to tickle his audience, and the tile reveal has done just that. Although “The Search for More Money” and “The Schwartz Awakens” were fantastic titles, Spaceballs: The New One is far more in line with Brooks’ mentality, and I am already gagging to get my first look. If the title is a sample of what awaits us, then this long-overdue sequel is going to be the biggest film of 2027, and I say, bring it on!
The Schwartz Awakens in 2027 when Spaceballs: The New One hits screens worldwide. May the Schwartz be with you!
