The Schwartz Awakens! The teaser trailer for Spaceballs 2 tells us that, instead of what the fans wanted, Mel Brooks is making this movie!
Rejoice! The Schwartz Awakens! After almost 40 years, 2027 will see Spaceballs 2 emerge from the depths of space. The original 1987 movie, written, directed and starring the legendary Mel Brooks, was an affectionate send-up of all things Star Wars. It took aim at any science fiction franchise it could. It even included references to Snow White. The film almost doubled its $20.5 million budget. Featuring Brooks, as well as Bill Pullman, John Candy, Rick Moranis, Daphne Zuniga, Dick Van Patten, George Wyner, Lorene Yarnell, and the voice of Joan Rivers, the film was hilarious.

Sadly, John Candy, Dick Van Patten, Lorene Yarnell and Joan Rivers have passed on. But in some stunning news, Brooks and Pullman will return to reprise their roles. The biggest news of all is that Rick Moranis will be coming out of his retirement to don the costume of Dark Helmet once again. Currently, there is no news if Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa or George Wyner as Colonel Sandurz will also be returning. A teaser trailer for the film has emerged from the dark recesses of space. And, as to be expected, it pokes fun at movies released ever since the original film. Let’s take a look.
THE ORIGINAL FILM
In Spaceballs, heroic mercenary Lone Starr (Pullman) and his alien sidekick Barf (Candy) rescue Princess Vespa (Zuniga) of Druidia. They also rescue her droid, Dot Matrix (Yarnell, voiced by Rivers). They save her from being captured by the Spaceballs, led by President Skroob (Brooks). He wants to use Vespa as ransom to obtain Druidia’s air for their own planet. However, the heroes get stranded on a desert moon. Here they encounter the wise Yogurt (also Brooks), who teaches Starr about the metaphysical power known as “the Schwartz”. Meanwhile, Spaceball commanders Dark Helmet (Moranis) and Colonel Sandurz (Wyner) lead the search for them. But they are hindered by their own incompetence.

From the ‘Combing The Desert’ scene, through ‘Radar Jamming’, the hilarious Alien ‘Chestburster’ scene and the final Planet Of The Apes gag, the film still resonates in the memory after almost 40 years. Can director Josh Greenbaum and writers Josh Gad, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez deliver a sequel that will live up to our expectations? Anything is possible with the amount of material they can spoof from the past 40 years!
