The Ice Cream Man chills, Super Troopers 3 brings the hilarity, and PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie will charm the family at the cinema this week.
Wait! What’s that? You couldn’t get into Spider-Man: Brand New Day or The Odyssey? You want to go and see something else instead? Then you’ve come to the right place! This week sees three big new releases hit the cinema screens across the country. For horror fans, they can get chilled by Ice Cream Man. For those in need of a good laugh or two, there’s Super Troopers 3. Or for the whole family, there’s PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie. Depending on what kind of mood you’re in, there’s something that will keep you entertained at the movies this week. With two other films opening as well, everyone will be well catered for.
ICE CREAM MAN
Studio Canal-Released Friday 7th August
Synopsis: An idyllic summer turns into sheer terror as an ice cream man serves up sweet delights – with horrifying results.

I saw the film early, and I’m sad to say, it isn’t good at all. I said in my review:
“Blood, guts, violence by the bucketload, held together by the thinnest of plots, Ice Cream Man isn’t one of Eli Roth’s best works. This is nowhere near the same ballpark as his two Hostel movies, Cabin Fever, or even Thanksgiving (all of which I personally loved), making this join the realms of his Death Wish remake and Borderlands. While the film doesn’t quite sink to those depths, it only just manages to rise above them. Roth seems to have taken ideas from other, more successful movies that worked, and combined them into a script that is thinner than the thinnest gruel. Blood, guts, and violence will only get you so far; you also need some semblance of a plot to make it succeed.”

PAW PATROL: THE DINO MOVIE

Synopsis: When their ship gets caught in a storm, the PAW Patrol pups wash up on a tropical island that’s teeming with dinosaurs. They soon befriend Rex, a baby dino who’s been stranded on the island for years. When Mayor Humdinger’s mining plans cause a huge volcano to erupt, the pups spring into action to save Rex’s home before everything becomes extinct.

We saw the film just under two weeks ago, and loved it. I said in my review:
“PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie is the perfect family film for the summer holidays. Funny, moving, and exciting, it is PAW-Some entertainment. It will certainly be a family film that the little ones will love and want to see over and over again. They will fall in love with the animated dinosaurs, laugh at the silliness of it all, and leave the cinema in high spirits. However, I will warn parents beforehand; just be prepared for the children to start asking for a toy version of many of the characters and creatures they see here. They are completely lovable, cute, and funny. And believe me, I should know; I’ve been looking for them for MYSELF! Especially the Compy’s and the cute baby dinosaur, Rhubarb, whom the kids will adore.”

SUPER TROOPERS 3

Our editor, Phil Roberts, had a lot of fun with the film, saying:
“Overall, I had a blast with Super Troopers 3. While it may not be the most original concept, the film delivers on everything it promises and then some. Sadly, it does show signs that the well may be running a little dry these days, and some of the cast suffer from a cut in their screen time, but in the end, it’s a comedy, and if we all go home happy, it’s mission accomplished.
By centering the film on the relationship between Ramathorn and Farva, we enjoy a ride that preaches acceptance, even in the face of racial differences that would usually keep people apart, and perhaps that is the best message the film conveys. It shows that even in the face of absurdity, communities can come together and set aside their petty differences to become a family. For a film packed with this many laughs, that’s a genuinely uplifting message to take home.”
