LEGO is back with another special. This time, rather than telling an original story, it offers a retelling to celebrate the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu on Disney+ today. LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian retells the first three seasons of the Emmy Award-winning series The Mandalorian, along with events from The Book of Boba Fett.
STORY
LEGO Star Wars specials are always a lot of fun, and this one is no exception. It was about time we had one about The Mandalorian. This one makes sure to cover Din Djarin and Grogu’s whole story from the TV series, so it’s a relief that it also includes the events from the underrated series The Book of Boba Fett.
Because it’s LEGO, it’s a funny retelling of the story, poking fun at different things and characters. And yes, they made a Baby Yoda joke. It’s LEGO; they had to! The appeal of these specials is that the characters are caricatures of themselves, allowing them to be made fun of in a lighthearted way. Fans of the series will enjoy it, but the whole family can also have a good time watching it.
VOICE CAST
Unfortunately, Pedro Pascal is not voicing Din Djarin in this LEGO special; it’s Gavin Hammon. Pedro Pascal is The Mandalorian, and The Mandalorian is Pedro Pascal. When you think of Din, you immediately hear Pedro’s voice. He’s irreplaceable. It’s even more of a shame that he’s not voicing Din in this special because most of the cast from the two series is actually back, even Nick Nolte! It’s such a joy to hear the voices of our beloved characters again. Amy Sedaris is comedy gold, staying true to herself. Bill Burr and David Pasquesi bring a lot of humor there too.
It’s been quite a long time since we’ve last seen Cobb Vanth; everyone wants him back. So even if it’s just for a LEGO special, it’s delightful to hear Timothy Olyphant as Cobb again. Dave Filoni, if you are reading this, you know what to do: bring back Cobb Vanth; he’s still alive, and so is Timothy.
Obviously, among the cast, there is one person who couldn’t return — Carl Weathers. He’s truly missed. Had he still been with us, I have no doubt he would have appeared in The Mandalorian and Grogu, even if only for a cameo. Weathers was truly special, and he brought so much to The Mandalorian. So, it’s comforting to see the character again. This time, he’s voiced by Carl Lumbly, and I think he does a wonderful job of honoring Weathers’ work on the character.
VERDICT
LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian is a fun retelling of the series’ events. It’s a delightful celebration of the story, and fans of The Mandalorian will certainly enjoy it. It’s also a great joy to hear most of the cast return to voice their characters.
