After investigating Cops Who Kill and Cops Gone Bad, Will Mellor is returning to Crime+Investigation for an all-new series. In Convictions Gone Bad, Mellor will delve into five of the most shocking miscarriages of justice in legal history. Joined by a seasoned former detective, a top forensic scientist and a legal expert, Will unpacks how the system got it so disastrously wrong and reveals the crucial new evidence that finally set the wrongfully convicted free.
Will hears from the falsely accused in their own words, providing an insight into what it’s like to be arrested, tried and convicted of the most horrendous of crimes; and the subsequent battle to clear their name.
THE SERIES
In the series, Will speaks with Justin Plummer, who served over 27 years in prison for a murder he didn’t commit, and Kevin Richardson of the Central Park 5. Other cases featured include Andrew Malkinson, Sam Hallam, and Angela Cannings, who collectively served over 25 years in prison whilst maintaining their innocence.
Alongside former Detective Inspector Howard Groves, Will takes a fresh look at the original crime, retracing the steps of the investigators and exploring how the case was built. Will meets forensic scientist Carol Rogers to examine the crucial evidence used by the prosecution to secure a conviction. They break down the complex science, revealing where the evidence was flawed and the expert advice was unsafe. He’s joined by legal expert Professor Claire McGourlay to chart the twists and turns of the appeal, until finally – the wrongfully convicted gets their day in court.
In this series produced by ITN for Crime+Investigation, Will examines what happens when the justice system fails; and the wrong person goes to prison for crimes they didn’t commit.
