Midnight Madness Memories

In advance of The Last Jedi product launch, Carl Roberts remembers Rogue Friday 2016

It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost a year since myself and other members of the Future of the Force team were standing outside a North London toy store awaiting the release of the Rogue One figures. The anticipation of getting our hands on the brand new collectable merchandise was, as usual, almost overwhelming. We arrived early enough to try and get good spots in the queue. It worked. Future of the Force’s secret sleuth Roy was unsurprisingly first in the queue. Stewart, Phil and myself weren’t far behind. Some of us had arrived there late afternoon, so a lot of patience was needed to wait until midnight! The patience was with us.

Suffice to say, we were in the door dead on midnight and couldn’t get to the display fast enough. We were restricted to only one item of each new product to start with, which was only fair. However, on our second time around we were allowed to buy what we wanted. It was certainly an expensive night out on the town!

In around a month’s time we get to do it all again, this time for the launch of The Last Jedi merchandise. I’m already excited as I can finally get my hands on a sequel trilogy Luke Skywalker figure. I still can’t understand why Hasbro didn’t release one for the Force Awakens line. If it was all down to a matter of screen time, then how do they explain Constable Zuvio? The Force Awakens was, at core, about the search for Luke. No excuses, Hasbro.

High praise must go to the staff at Toys R Us, Brent Cross for making last year’s event so much fun. They made everyone feel welcome at the store, offered us cups of tea and coffee throughout and were generally great fun to talk to. I remember a staff member apologising for having to make us leave when they closed the store to get the Rogue One display set up. It was a little chilly outside and the gesture was a welcome one. The staff were a credit to the company and I look forward to seeing them again this year.

I wanted to share some photos of the event with you. Hopefully these will help build excitement for this year. Midnight madness is calling again. Myself and other members of the Future of the Force team will be there to report back, wherever in the world we happen to be.

Until then, I hope you enjoy the photographs and as always…

May The Force Be With You.
