They're Right to Fear Her | The Trailer For X-Men: Dark Phoenix Arrives

The X-Men face their greatest foe in the climax to the 20th Century Fox Mutant Series

With the imminent acquisition of 20th Century Fox by Disney looming over the company like the Death Star waiting to strike, the future of the Marvel brand looks bright. The reunification of every Marvel property under the one umbrella is fantastic news for the fans and will ensure a legacy that will see the X-Men and Fantastic 4 return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

However, before we can look ahead to the prospect of an X-Men/Avengers super team-up, 20th Century Fox is forging ahead with the climax of their mutant series titled X-Men: Dark Phoenix. This sequel will be the first film in the X-Men series since First Class not to be directed by Bryan Singer following the disappointing box office return of X-Men: Apocalypse.

Say what you will about Bryan Singer’s X-Men movies, the man knows the X-Men franchise through and through. He originated the franchise back in 2000, cemented its popularity with X2: X-Men United and went on to restore the franchise to prominence in X-Men: Days of Future Past following the character assassination of X-Men: The Last Stand. With the franchise rejuvenated and the mistreated characters restored to their rightful standings, the future looked bright. Sadly, X-Men: Apocalypse failed to build upon those tireless efforts and despite offering some fantastic sequences the movie failed to resonate with the audience like the previous instalments.

Fast forward to 2018 and we are looking ahead to X-Men: Dark Phoenix with renewed hope that the final film in the 20th Century Fox mutant series will go out with a bang and prove to be a fitting climax to what has been a noteworthy series of movies. And, with the motion picture less than four months away from release, Fox has given us our first look at what we can expect when the X-Men come face to face with an enemy that knows them better than they know themselves…Jean Grey.

Check out the first official trailer:

And, if that wasn’t enough to get our mutant genes activated, Fox has also unveiled the stunning new one-sheet movie poster which you can save to your phone background here:

Final Thoughts:

Despite offering some gloriously intense action sequences, we can only hope that Fox has learned lessons from the abomination of X-Men: The Last Stand and have remained true to the original source material. Fans of the X-Men franchise will know that the Phoenix itself is an intergalactic entity which possesses the body of Jean Grey and channels itself through her incredible telekinetic powers. The Phoenix consumes Jean and wages war on the galaxy leaving the X-Men torn between stopping the Phoenix and rescuing Jean from its clutches.

Whether or not, Fox can truly pull this most beloved of storylines out of the bag remains to be seen, but without the inclusion of series icon Wolverine to lead the charge, we are justified in our reservations about its potential. Personally, I look forward to the series coming to a close and the X-Men returning to the Marvel stable where they will be free to rejoin the Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The prospect of having Wolverine, Spider-Man, the Fantastic 4 and Captain America in the same movie is an enticing prospect, one that will undoubtedly propel our excitement levels beyond the stratosphere but before we can look ahead to a brighter future, we can all head to the cinema on Valentines Day next year to see if Fox has learnt from their failings of the past.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix arrives on our screens on February 14th, 2019.

    1. I’m just hoping they do the franchise justice and don’t retread the same character assassination of The Last Stand. And, i’m totally with you on Logan, it would have been a fitting climax to the whole series!

      Thanks for reading.
