Gunn will write and direct the project which will relaunch the Suicide Squad franchise with a fresh approach
James Gunn is officially writing and directing the relaunch of Suicide Squad for Warner Bros. Despite being rumoured for some time, his official appointment has been announced and the Guardians of the Galaxy director will now take the helm of what is being described as a complete overhaul of the Suicide Squad property titled ‘The Suicide Squad’
The project was expected to be a direct sequel to the divisive 2016 Blockbuster starring Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Will Smith as Deadshot, however, the studio heads at Warner Bros. feel the success of Aquaman has opened the door to new possibilities with a boost of freshness that only Gunn can inject.
According to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, Gunn will be using a mostly new cast of characters and actors but has not ruled out the involvement of characters from the previous incarnation. Gunn was widely expected to be shooting the conclusion to the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy this year, however, the resurfacing of some VERY old and controversial Twitter posts caused the studio heads at Disney to relieve him of his duties. Thankfully, the decision makers at Warner Bros. and DC Comics do not feel the same way and Gunn will now be bringing his considerable talent to the rejuvenated DC Cinematic Universe.
The Suicide Squad is expected to hit cinemas around the world on August 6, 2021
