Liam reveals his top five moments from George Lucas’ stunning Star Wars prequel…
From the debut of Darth Maul to the hypersonic Boonta Eve Classic Podrace, Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace was packed full of eye-widening moments. Join Liam as he takes a retrospective look at George Lucas’ stellar prequel to select his top five moments.
5. Ending Celebrations
After the death of Qui-Gon Jinn and his funeral, the movie looked set the finish on a low. But with the Naboo Celebrations that followed, it provided fans with the boost of joy that we all needed. This couldn’t have been a more perfect end to the movie, the music, the dancing, and the Jedi, Gungans and Naboo altogether after hope has been restored.
4. Duel of the Fates
It’s hard not to include this scene in my top 5, but it’s inevitably got to be in there. The first time I saw this scene, I loved everything about it, Maul’s appearance and fighting style were unique and his double-bladed lightsaber blew my mind. The relationship between Qui-Gon-Jinn and Obi-Wan was as clear as ever, especially when Qui-Gon is killed. The soundtrack for this scene is unbelievable, without the music, this scene could be very similar to every other lightsaber battle, but the music completely changes everything and draws you further into the action.
3. The Opening Jedi Knight Sequence
The introduction of the Jedi in The Phantom Menace was very impressive, I loved the gas that separated Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon and a group of battle droids leaving viewers in suspense. Protocol droid TC-14 leaves the room, and then all of a sudden there is the glow of two lightsabers followed by the two Jedi emerging from the dioxis, destroying all of the droids with ease.
2. Boonta Eve Classic
When The Phantom Menace was released in 1999 I was three years old. One of the scenes I remember watching and loving was the Boonta Eve Classic Podrace featuring several different alien podracers as well as highlighting the rivalry between Anakin Skywalker and Sebulba. Thanks to the storytelling of George Lucas, this is one of the scenes that will always keep me on the edge of my seat; it’s got some really cool looking characters like Ben Quadrinaros, Gasgano, Ratts Tyrell, and Mawhonic amongst others and it also brought a different vibe to Star Wars which wasn’t seen in the original trilogy.
There are so many different elements to the race that I love, Aurra Sing and the Tusken Raiders making an appearance, the commentary by Fode and Beed, the sound effects and the designs of the Pod Racers. I also love the build-up to the race, when it’s revealed that Anakin has never actually finished a race, everyone around him is doubtful; then his racer doesn’t start, which makes it look even more like Anakin is set to fail, but with his determination and his skill primarily, Anakin gets straight into the action and makes history.
The Capture of Nute Gunray
This scene will always be one of my favourites as it sees Queen Amidala, Captain Panaka and the Naboo Guards overcome the threat of Nute Gunray and the separatists on Theed. I’ve always admired Captain Panaka in The Phantom Menace, and this scene truly highlights him as a character, strong-willed, battle ready and an excellent tactician.
I also loved it when Panaka passed Nute Gunray and Rune Haako over to the Republic for trial and said, “I think you can kiss your trade franchise good-bye.”
