McGregor rumoured to have signed on to play Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi in an all-new Disney+ series
Update: It would appear that the force is strong with this rumour because Deadline is reporting that Ewan McGregor IS definitely in negotiations to finalise a deal to return as Obi-Wan Kenobi. Whereas yesterday’s reports suggested the deal was done, today’s update confirms that the deal is “close” meaning we could be welcoming the announcement of an Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series as early as next week. Hello there!
The force rumour mill has sparked into life once again and is suggesting that Ewan McGregor has signed on the dotted line to return as Obi-Wan Kenobi for an all-new Disney+ Star Wars series. As always, it’s advisable to take this rumour with a pinch of salt, but if proven to be accurate we could be hearing more about this potential series next week at Disney’s D23 Expo.
The rumour emerged via Cinelinx and in the aftermath of its publication speculation about the news has been rife. There has even been a suggestion that as part of the deal McGregor would assume directorial duties for several episodes. Ewan McGregor portrayed Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequels The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith and lent his vocals to the character in a force vision sequence in J.J Abrams’ The Force Awakens.
The actor has never been shy about voicing his wish to return to the role. It has been fourteen years since his last appearance in Revenge of the Sith and his desire to bring a whole new depth to the character is refreshing. He has even gone as far as to suggest he’d be willing to shoot multiple movies.
“I’ve always thought there was a story to tell between my last one and Alec Guinness’ first one. It would be fun to film that story now I’m older, I’d be the right age. I’m forty-five, Alec Guinness was what, sixty? I could do two of them! I hope that they’re going to explore different genres under the Star Wars banner. And one of those could be an Obi-Wan Kenobi feature film. Or two! The Obi-Wan Kenobi Story Part 1 and Part 2!”
Star Wars fans will know all too well that an Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone project has in the works at Lucasfilm for some time, however, the failure of Solo: A Star Wars Story at the worldwide box office forced a fundamental rethink by the powers that be and as a result, all standalone projects have been shelved for the foreseeable future.
Whether this report holds any water aside, I am crossing my fingers for a future Obi-Wan Kenobi project somewhere down the line. There is a twenty-year gap between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope and the fans are desperate to explore that timeframe with Ewan McGregor. The fans want it to happen, McGregor wants it to happen, but as always, the power remains in the grasp of Disney/Lucasfilm.
