The duo’s staggering $250 million development deal with Netflix changes the game for Star Wars
While Rian Johnson has been talking up his excitement to be returning to the galaxy far, far away and moving beyond its beloved legacy characters, the first movie set to emerge from the Lucasfilm stable following a brief hiatus is expected to be from David Benioff and D.B Weiss. It has been reported that the duo was expected to write an all-new trilogy “expected to focus on the Knights of the Old Republic“, but it turns out this may not be the case.
According to a report from the Hollywood Reporter about the duo’s astronomical deal with Netflix, the two may only be contractually obligated to pen one of the movies. Sources say the Thrones pair is writing a treatment for a Star Wars trilogy and is committed to penning at least one of the films (the original deal was to write all three). It’s unclear if the duo, who also have another feature for Fox/Disney carved out, will do more than just write for Star Wars.
The duo was brought aboard the Lucasfilm ship way back in February and in the months that followed, the duo’s work on the series finale of Game of Thrones came under fire for its mishandling of the property. Their work on the finale became the worst-reviewed and most divisive episodes of the show’s entire run, but that has not dissuaded Netflix who moved quickly to snap up their services and weren’t afraid to pay top dollar for the privilege.
Of course, contracts such as these are renowned for their grey areas and until the particulars of the deal come to light the arrangement with Lucasfilm is expected to be upheld. However, the studio has never been shy about removing directors from their obligations once it feels that their visions do not align, and with the $250 million contracts with Netflix hanging over their head, Benioff and Weiss may opt to give the streaming giant its monies worth.
Until then, we’ll await the confirmation.
