The Star Wars Toy manufacturer assumes the responsibility for Sony’s Ghostbusters relaunch!
They’re the best, they’re the beautiful and they’re the only Ghostbusters…and they are heading to the Hasbro toy line in 2020. The Star Wars action figures manufacturer has been named as the master toy licensee worldwide for Sony’s Ghostbusters franchise, with the first product line being released next year.
The new partnership between Sony and Hasbro, which coincidentally comes into play in time for Jason Reitman’s eagerly awaited sequel/reboot is a return to the glory days when Kenner, the toy giant Hasbro inherited in the deal to buy Tonka produced action figures for The Real Ghostbusters animated series.
The new deal was hinted at earlier in the year when the toy giant produced an Ecto-1 Transformers/Ghostbusters crossover toy to commemorate the 35th anniversary of both properties.
“As we build up to release our new Ghostbusters film next year, it was a natural choice to work with Hasbro to develop an all-new line of toys that not only celebrates the new film but also brings us back to the roots of the original film and toy line,” said Jamie Stevens, executive vice president with Sony Pictures Consumer Products. “Hasbro has a proven track record of working with well-known IP to make a variety of high-quality toys and figures that appeal to people of all ages, and we are excited to leverage this expertise to bring new product experiences to Ghostbusters fans around the world.”
Hasbro senior VP Tom Warner added, “Ghostbusters is an iconic and beloved franchise and we are excited and honoured to return to the brand as the global master toy licensee and bring a new product to the next generation of fans. Drawing on Hasbro’s proprietary insights and culture of innovation, we are working closely with Sony Pictures Consumer Products to create a dynamic new toy line that we can’t wait to share with fans around the world.”
This is exciting news. With Hasbro finally addressing its worldwide distribution issues over the past year, it is most refreshing to see the company set to produce a new range of Ghostbusters toys and action figures from Jason Reitman’s new movie.
As a fan of the original and updated Diamond Select Real Ghostbusters line, I cannot wait to see what Hasbro has in store for us. The recent addition of the facial recognition software which is now being applied to its Marvel Legends and Star Wars Black Series action figure lines promises to deliver the best Ghostbusters figures in recent memory, and that is ridiculously exciting.
Bring it on!
