The Marvel Studios Supremo will climb aboard the Lucasfilm train to helm a new Star Wars movie
Okay, this one came as a bolt out of the blue, but THR is reporting that Marvel Studios supremo Kevin Feige has agreed to join the Lucasfilm development team to helm an all-new Star Wars movie with Kathleen Kennedy.
Feige is a well known Star Wars fan and with his current track record with Marvel taken into consideration, his appointment would make perfect sense. Lucasfilm will be looking for a fresh direction once The Rise of Skywalker culminates the Skywalker legacy, but with the divisive reaction to The Last Jedi still fresh in the minds of Lucasfilm executives, Feige would be the best choice to reenergize the franchise with a little Marvel-style continuity.
Walt Disney Studios co-chairman and chief creative officer Alan Horn had this to say about the deal:
“We are excited about the projects Kathy and the Lucasfilm team are working on, not only in terms of Star Wars but also Indiana Jones and reaching into other parts of the company including Children of Blood and Bone with Emma Watts and Fox. With the close of the Skywalker Saga, Kathy is pursuing a new era in Star Wars storytelling, and knowing what a die-hard fan Kevin is, it made sense for these two extraordinary producers to work on a Star Wars film together.”
A few weeks back, the deal between Sony and Marvel/Disney pertaining to the continued use of Spider-Man fell apart on the basis that Feige would be far too busy with his current slate of projects to oversee Spider-Man’s presence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At the time, it was reported that his slate was being consumed by the imminent arrival of properties like the Fantastic Four and the X-Men, however, it seems that the galaxy far, far away may have played an instrumental part in the process.
It is still unknown what part in the Star Wars universe Feige will play, neither whether his movie will be a franchise starter or standalone adventure, however, THR reports that he has a very specific star in mind for the lead:
“One knowledgeable source says Feige has told a major actor that there’s a specific role he would like that person to play if and when he makes the movie.”
This report arrives amidst more rumours suggesting Captain Marvel star Brie Larson, a massive Star Wars fan in her own right is being eyed to lead her very own trilogy of Star Wars movies. Whether this rumour has any truth to it remains to be seen so take it with a pinch of salt, but if proven to be true the future of the galaxy far, far away is going to look very different.
Alongside The Rise of Skywalker, other Star Wars projects still in production are Jon Favreau’s first-ever live-action series, The Mandalorian, an all-new trilogy of movies from The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson, a new trilogy from Game of Thrones‘ David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, a Rogue One Cassian Andor prequel series and Ewan Mcgregor’s hotly-anticipated Obi-Wan Kenobi series.
With Kevin Feige sprinkling his Marvel magic over proceedings, the future of the Star Wars universe appears to be in safe hands, and with the slate already packed with wonderful new additions to the saga, I’d say the galaxy far, far away is alive and well.
