The Batman | Colin Farrell & Andy Serkis in Talks for Major Roles

The immensely talented cast list for Matt Reeves’ take on the Batman mythology is growing by the day. In recent weeks Robert Pattinson has been confirmed as the Dark Knight, Zoë Kravitz has been cast as Catwoman, Paul Dano will slip into the iconic green suit as The Riddler and Jeffrey Wright will fight for Gotham’s soul as Commissioner Gordon; and now word is reaching the wires that both Andy Serkis and Colin Farrell may soon be joining them.

Andy Serkis, a mainstay of Matt Reeves’ filmography is reportedly set to become Bruce Wayne’s devoted butler Alfred Pennyworth, while Farrell is currently closing in on a deal to become … The Penguin!

Personally, I would have never pegged Farrell for the role of Oswald Copplepot, and yet the actor will almost certainly bring a wealth of talent to the role. Furthermore, this will mark the first comic book role the actor has taken since his portrayal of Bullseye in the divisive big-screen version of Daredevil. Serkis, on the other hand, makes perfect sense. The actor has played an intricate part of Reeves’ Planet of the Apes movies and has experience in the comic book genre following a successful stint in the MCU as Ulysses Klaue and his director’s credit on the upcoming Venom sequel.

Aside from the glittering cast list, we still know very little about the plot of The Batman, but Matt Reeves has promised that his movie will do justice to Batman’s hard-earned reputation of the World’s Greatest Detective.

“It’s very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale. It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime, it’s going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation”

Whether or not these reports hold any water remains to be seen. But, we live in exciting times and Matt Reeves appears to be going all out to deliver the mother of all Batman movies!

The Batman is expected to swoop into cinemas in June 25th 2021.
