Olyphant to play Cobb Vanth – self-appointed sheriff of Tatooine settlement Freetown
Well, this one came out of the blue. Last week we brought you the news that Timothy Olyphant had been cast in The Mandalorian Season 2 in a mystery role – and after few days pondering his influence on proceedings, Slashfilm has got word that Olyphant has been cast as Cobb Vanth – a self-appointed sheriff of the Tatooine settlement Freetown. Even more intriguing is the fact that Olyphant apparently filmed the majority of his scenes wearing Boba Fett‘s iconic Mandalorian armor!!!
Say what?! You heard right. Boba Fett’s armor!
The character of Cobb Vanth made his debut in Chuck Wendig’s Star Wars: Aftermath book series and quickly became a person of interest due to him wearing a mysterious set of Mandalorian armor that was acquired from Jawas. The notoriously shrewd Jawas had salvaged everything they could from the wreck of Jabba’s Sail Barge. The site was where Boba Fett supposedly lost his life in Return of the Jedi. So is the armor worn by Cobb Boba Fett’s armor?
We know that Temuera Morrison has been cast as Boba Fett in season 2 of the hit Star Wars series, but at the time of his capture, we understood that his role was somewhat of a small one. Quite how small is anyone’s guess. But IF Boba Fett actually perished in the belly of the Great Pit of Carkoon then Morrison’s role could be nothing more than a flashback. Or, maybe Fett IS still very much alive and wants his armor back – from the man who now wears it! Either way, this is setting up a badass story arc for Season 2.
It should be noted that the details surrounding Cobb Vanth were revealed in the Aftermath book series. As of press time, we still have no idea how he will feature in the events of Season 2, nor is it clear whether Boba Fett is dead or alive. Also, nothing should be taken for granted until the official word is released from either Lucasfilm or Jon Favreau, but this report is all the more intriguing.
All will be revealed when The Mandalorian Season 2 hits Disney+ this October.
