Annlyel shares her top five Marvel movies to get you through the COVID-19 Pandemic
As the sun shines and the summer heat blares people around the world are ready to soak up the season with fun outdoor activities that give us a chance to spend time with loved ones and friends…but that won’t happen the way we planned this year. This year, it’s indoors that will have to become our playground where adventures can be discovered and relationships can be forged.
Movie time is always a fun way to bring the family together and that’s why, as we face this global pandemic together, it’s a good time to find some films the whole family can enjoy. So, I’m beginning this segment with one of the most successful franchises of all time, Marvel, and the top five Marvel Studios films to watch.
1. Iron Man
The film that began a journey that’s now twelve years into the making, Robert Downey Jr. would return to Hollywood supremacy as he brought to life a character that was no Batman or Superman. Iron Man was a pretty obscure character known only to those who read the Marvel Comics or occasionally saw him in cartoons and that’s what was so brilliant about this hero’s origin story being Marvel Studios’ debut. It was a character no one really knew about and people fell in love with the hero’s narcissistic streak paired with undeniable heroism that became apparent whenever he donned his awesome Iron Man suit.
The film currently has a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes, highlighting its critical acclaim.
2. The Avengers
Before you had Avengers: Infinity War or Endgame there was simply The Avengers, a film that brought together six of Earth’s mightiest heroes to face a world-ending threat led by Thor’s brother, Loki. The movie could’ve been a flop. Instead, it was a booming success, becoming the highest-grossing film of 2012 as it made a little over 1.5 billion dollars! And it wasn’t a surprise either. With characters that had already been established in the MCU, The Avengers was able to tell a fun story with some of the best action sequences in the MCU to date, delivering a powerful experience that had fans clamoring for more.
The Avengers was the film that helped turn me into an avid Marvel fan. The rest is history.
3. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Captain America’s origin story in The First Avenger was an entertaining film but it was his sequel that made him one of the most compelling heroes in the MCU. The Winter Soldier is still heralded as one of the best superhero movies ever made with a complex storyline that keeps you guessing from beginning to end. Its Mission: Impossible-like storytelling made this film stand out from the pack, resulting in an unforgettable experience that left many fans wowed after watching the movie. Don’t sleep on this movie, it is truly one of the best.
4. Guardians of the Galaxy
Want to watch a film that’s a little fun and wacky, packed full of songs that’ll get your body moving and grooving, riddled with fantastic action scenes laced with eye-popping visuals, and follows the story of five very lovable heroes…of sorts? Then you’ll want to watch Guardians of the Galaxy, the movie that wasn’t afraid to step outside of the comfort zone and deliver a different story that was just as riveting and enjoyable as the likes of The Avengers. This movie could’ve potentially tanked Marvel Studios if its wonkiness had taken a left turn. Instead, it only proved that this franchise was unstoppable as Guardians of the Galaxy would open to massive critical acclaim and would become the third highest-grossing film of 2014 with $772 million. Think about it! A movie about a male human who has a specific love for 70s’ tunes, a green-skinned female assassin who is as beautiful as she is deadly, a shirtless dagger-wielding alien maniac, a talking raccoon who likes to blow up moons, and a friendly talking tree. It could’ve easily been a disaster. Thank goodness it wasn’t.
5. Avengers: Endgame
While I personally feel that Avengers: Infinity War is the best Avengers movie there’s no denying the impact Endgame left on the world with its beautiful finale. It concluded a story that took fans on a ride since 2008 with a powerful ending that left fans cheering and crying all at once. We were forced to say goodbye to some of our favorite heroes but from the holes that had been created in our hearts rose new versions of heroes that will get their chance to shine in the coming movies and Disney+ series. This film would go on to be the highest-grossing film of all time for a reason. It was well-made and very enjoyable, even despite its lengthy runtime of nearly three hours, as it featured moments that we will never forget experiencing on the big screen.
(Because there are so many great Marvel movies I would like to add some Honorable Mentions: Thor: Ragnarok, Ant-Man, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Black Panther, and Captain Marvel.)
All of these movies, besides Spider-Man: Homecoming, is available to watch on Disney+. Spider-Man: Homecoming is available to watch on Amazon.
