Rumors suggest Foxx could reprise his role as Electro in the MCU
Chalk this one up as a complete shocker.
Reports are emerging that suggest Jamie Foxx is set to reprise his role as Electro in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Foxx portrayed Electro in Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and is now rumored to be in final talks to bring the character into the MCU to face-off against Tom Holland‘s web-slinger.
According to THR, director Jon Watts has set his sights on bringing the many incarnations of the Spider-Verse together after beginning the process in Spider-Man Far From Home when he included J.K Simmons’ J. Jonah Jameson – a character last seen in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. Foxx’s last outing in the Spider-Verse was not the debut he would have hoped for. Andrew Garfield’s final appearance as the web-head was derided by both fans and critics alike – and its underperformance at the global box office was enough to force Sony Pictures into a rethink. One of the many aspects fans were unsatisfied with was Foxx’s performance – but having Marvel Studios overseeing production may be enough to sway fan opinion.
Story details for Spider-Man 3 (which is the first movie to have Marvel Studios leading production on) are being kept under wraps, but having Foxx breaking down the barriers of the multiverse to bring Electro into the MCU is a wholly unexpected and bold move.
Persoanlly, I was not a fan of Foxx’s performance in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and the idea of him suiting up against Tom Holland’s web-slinger does not fill me with confidence. However, Kevin Feige and his wonderful team have a proven track record that has delivered awesomeness in abundance. And if anyone can help turn this incarnation of Electro around it’s them.
Until we have confirmation from an official source at Marvel Studios, we should take this report with a VERY big pinch of salt. However, if proven to be accurate, it represents a very big gamble from the studio.
