This week on the Official Film Chart – Wonder Woman survives a resurgence from The Witches and Godzilla to remain at the top of the charts
Welcome to the Official Film Chart.
This week, the blockbuster ‘Godzilla vs Kong‘ continues to dominate in the PVOD charts. The film currently sits at number one at the U.S box office too. People can’t seem to get enough of giant monsters beating the hell out of each other. Thanks to the numbers it’s generating, more films in the series are planned. Whether they will continue to follow Kong or Godzilla remains to be seen. But money talks so anything is possible.
AMAZON PRIME VIDEO
Prime Video continues with its price drops of certain digital titles. For another week, my collection has grown somewhat. New titles are being added on an almost daily basis. All this ahead of ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League‘ hitting home entertainment at the end of May. Plus the already mentioned ‘Godzilla vs Kong‘ hits all formats in June after what is a probable cinema release from May 17th. Showcase Cinemas have confirmed they will be screening the film when they reopen. It is now a case of whether Cineworld and Vue follow their lead.
OFFICIAL FILM CHART
As for what is available right now, it is all hands on deck once again. Titles have joined us. Others have left. This week sees the loss of ‘Wonder Woman/ Wonder Woman 1984 Boxset‘ and ‘The Passion Of The Christ.’ But who or what has the coveted number one position? Has ‘Wonder Woman 1984‘ managed to beat off all pretenders to her throne once again? Or has something decided to dethrone her after her spell atop the charts? Let us see who has won the chart battle for this week.
WW84 DOMINATES…AGAIN!
She just won’t quit. After five weeks at the top of the chart, ‘Wonder Woman 1984‘ retains her position. The DC sequel has continued its winning run. It has been boosted by the release of The Snyder Cut. Gal Gadot’s second film in the proposed trilogy hit the ground running and hasn’t looked back. It has mostly sold this week on all the disc formats. Despite a surge from the second-place title, the film has comfortably held off all challengers once again.

Thanks to the PVOD release of ‘Godzilla vs Kong‘, the previous film ‘Godzilla: King Of The Monsters‘ rises a place. The second solo film for the Toho creation ends this week in the second-placed position. The film has seen a 34% uplift from last week, thanks to the digital market. With the new film doing great business, the film should hang around the charts for a while longer.

BAFTA WINNER!
Losing a place as it ends the week in third, the Disney/Pixar animated film ‘Soul‘ still manages to hold onto a top placing. The film, so cruelly denied a cinematic release has benefitted from hitting the home formats. All this despite being available for free to Disney+ subscribers. However, you can’t deny the film deserves to be owned physically. Featuring the voice of Jamie Foxx, the film is a multi-award winner. This past weekend saw the film claim two BAFTAS at the ceremony in London. It is bound for Oscar glory in two weeks. That isn’t in doubt.

Laughing once again as it rises fifteen places to take the fourth spot is DCs ‘Joker‘. The multi-award-winning film from 2019 continues to come and go as it pleases. Joaquin Phoenix gives a superb performance as the main character and the film is chilling. This is a version of the clown prince of crime never seen before. Dark, nasty, chilling, and violent. It keeps the audience on its toes from the start and is a brilliant drama. And it too deserves to be in everyone’s collection at home.

SPIDER-SENSE
The rain has washed ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home‘ out slightly this week. But not too much as the film hangs onto a top-five placing as it ends the week in fifth place. Ahead of the third film hitting screens at Christmas (at the moment), Tom Holland continues to swing around. The film continues to be a success on the home front.
COMING SOON
Hitting disc from Monday, the BAFTA-nominated drama ‘County Lines‘ becomes available. The film is already available on digital. It tells the story of a 14-year-old boy who is groomed into a ‘county lines’ criminal network. The film is a powerful coming of age drama. It is based on stories writer/director Henry Blake heard from youngsters at an East London pupil referral unit. Blake himself mentored these young people. The film boasts an incredible performance from Conrad Khan as the main character, Tyler. This led to the actor being nominated for the EE rising star BAFTA this year.
Supporting performances from Best Supporting actress BAFTA nominee Ashley Madekwe and Harris Dickinson make the film a triumph. It is certainly worth watching even though, at times, it is a tough watch. Buy it on the disc formats from Monday, April 19th.
PHILOSOPHER’S FUN
As if by magic, we return to the top ten. And using his magic, ‘Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone‘ emerges in the sixth spot. The family favorite has risen seven places over the past seven days. The film has hit its highest position in the charts and makes its top ten debuts finally. It isn’t the only film in the franchise that holds a place in the top twenty positions. ‘Harry Potter & The Chamber Of Secrets‘ holds the fifteenth position. ‘Harry Potter & The Prisoner Of Azkaban‘ is in eighteenth place. And ‘Harry Potter & The Goblet Of Fire‘ resides in the nineteenth spot. And finally, ‘Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince‘ is in position twenty.
The Mystery Machine has run out of fuel. The snacks have all been eaten. And the ghosts have run riot. This means that ‘Scoob!‘ drops two places this week to take seventh place on the chart.

HARRY’S BACK!
Not being content with taking sixth place this week. Or that four of its films hold placings inside the top twenty. Eighth place this week goes to ‘The Harry Potter-The Complete Collection‘ boxset as it rises two places from last week’s tenth place.
Their magic has all but deserted them over the past seven days. Dropping a place to ninth comes the remake of ‘The Witches‘. The Robert Zemeckis directed film is a former number one. But that hasn’t stopped its steady decline down the listings.

And finally, ‘Trolls: World Tour‘ drops four places. The animated sequel now sits over the chart exit door in the tenth position. But the film tends to bounce back up frequently so it may yet stay inside the top ten for a while. Anything is possible!

WRAPPING UP!
And now the time has come to borrow the cloak from Harry Potter and disappear for another week. My thanks to you all for joining me on our tour through the official film chart. All that remains for me to say is…Whatever you decide, whatever you buy. Stay safe. Be Kind. Look after each other and happy viewing!
