Marvel Studios' Eternals

This is a sad prediction for Marvel’s Eternals.  But I honestly have a gut feeling that I’m going to be right about this one.

Death in the MCU. It’s not something that happens often when it pertains to the protagonists in the story. Hence the reason why having to watch so many of our favorite characters perish in Infinity War and Endgame was so tough. But if we’ve learned anything from Phase 4 of the MCU so far, it’s that the writers and storytellers are not afraid to shake things up. But will heroes die in Marvel’s next tentpole adventure Eternals?

Here’s why it’s almost a necessity for some of the Eternals to die.

HEROES

Eternals is about to introduce us to ten new heroes: Sersi (Gemma Chan), Ikaris (Richard Madden), Ajak (Salma Hayek); Thena (Angelina Jolie), Gilgamesh (Don Lee), Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani), Sprite (Lia McHugh). Druig (Barry Keoghan); Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry), and Makkari (Lauren Ridloff).

These heroes are 7000 years old. And they have been assigned by the all-powerful Celestials to protect Earth from the Deviants. Their sworn enemy. And so, because of Iron Man using the Infinity Gauntlet to bring everyone back to life, the Deviants have returned. And the Eternals must face them to save humanity.

THE TRAILER

If you’ve seen the official trailer for Eternals you may have noticed the very epic-yet-serious tone of the trailer. The goosebump-inducing music imbues each frame with a sense that a very powerful and destructive impending doom has arrived. And it’s not going to be an easy fight for the Eternals. Physically or emotionally.

Chloe Zhao understands how to tell an emotional story. And I think she’s going to absolutely rip our hearts out by getting us attached to certain members of the Eternals. Before having them killed by a Deviant, thus adding that emotional punch the film will need. And, for us to really take the Deviants seriously in the same way that we took Thanos seriously; we need to see these evil beings actually inflict serious harm upon our heroes so that we can fully appreciate the stakes of this story. So, which Eternal will perish before the film’s end?

1. Ajak

Ajak is the leader of the Eternals and that means her potential death would be utterly gutwrenching for the group. It could even cause a potential rift among the Eternals. As some would seek to retreat from the war with the Deviants in order to save their own while others would want to save humanity in her memory. Plus, from a writing standpoint, she has the ability to heal. So if you take away the healer of the group it makes it much harder for the rest of the Eternals as they face the remaining Deviants.

2. Druig

Druig, according to what I’ve researched, has always been an outsider in the comics. In fact, he’s a bit of a villain. I don’t know if Chloe Zhao will make him an antagonistic type or a hero like the rest of his peers. But either way, I see Druig perishing by the end of the movie.

(Possibility: Makkari and Gilgamesh)

Makkari seems like she’s going to be a very likable character, making her a prime contender for the Eternal that will break our hearts if she died. And Gilgamesh, from what I’ve gleaned from interviews, seems to be Thena’s closest friend among the Eternals. Gilgamesh’s death would affect Thena personally. And it really lights a fire under her story in the film.

DEATH IN THE MCU

Of course, there’s a possibility that no one will die in this movie but there’s been precedent before in the MCU. Just look at the last MCU origin story that featured an ensemble group, Guardians of the Galaxy. The film introduced five new characters and to provide that emotional wallop to get us even more invested in the already-great story James Gunn had Groot sacrifice himself to save his newfound family. It’s a touching moment and one of the best scenes in the entire movie.

Groot

So yes, this is a sad prediction but I honestly have a gut feeling that I’m going to be right about this one.
