Max takes a look back at the career of the late Bob Saget and shares his memories of the series that made him a household name. Full House!

January 2021 entered rather poorly as we lost the beloved comedian and TV dad Bob Saget. Bob was only 65 (the same age as my father) and was found unresponsive in his hotel room bed. Foul play and drug use were ruled out by the coroner. So it appears he may have had a heart attack or some other ridiculously unfair method of passing.

FULL HOUSE

Bob Saget was most well known as Danny Tanner on Full House and the host of America’s Funniest Home Videos. Bob was described as one of the nicest people in the business, and I am 100% sure that it is 100% true. His passing saddened me more than I expected. I spent my tender childhood years watching him father three little girls without a mom on Full House. Full House ended syndication in ’94 a year after I was born, but I grew up in the ’00s watching re-runs. I have very distinct memories of watching the show at age 10. And feeling a sense of security and bliss while listening to the upbeat theme/opening song and watching the girls navigate the perilous journey to adulthood.

DANNY TANNER

Bob Saget’s character Danny Tanner was the quintessential “90’s dad” and I admired his patience and kindness. I remember when he punished his youngest daughter Michelle for the first time. And remember when he consoled his oldest daughter DJ when she learned about the cruelties of Alzheimer’s plaguing her older friend from the Senior Center. I laughed at his goofy dad-geekiness and the juxtaposition to his much “cooler” brother-in-law. And I loved that he was a reporter and then talk show host in his San Francisco district. I even adored their townhouse and wished with all my heart that I could live there.

CAN YOU SEE MY VOICE

The last time I “saw” Bob was when he guest-starred on an episode of Can You See My Voice as he helped the contestants think which of the mystery people could sing. He was incredibly patient, kind, and quiet when doing so, but managed to slip in a clever joke. I feel like a part of my innocence died with Bob. And now, I will wince when I see him “alive and well” in the digital ageless universe of Full House. All of his co-stars were devastated and released their heartfelt prayers for his wife and family. While also lamenting on a man they loved and worked for over 8 years.

TV FAMILY

Candace Cameron Baret, Jodie Sweetin, Mary Kate, and Ashley Olsen DID grow up with him; as he was truly their TV father alongside their biological ones. They will miss and remember him forever, as will I. Full House was one of the few sitcoms that moved me to tears. And it’s always good to know that such a soft side exists within my soul. John Mayer and Jeff Ross picked up poor Bob’s car and drove it back to his late wife. John broke down as he was good friends with Saget. And it must’ve been one of the strangest and saddest car rides I could ever imagine.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Bob had no intention of slowing down and was doing a comedy tour right before he died. He spoke to his wife mere hours before his passing, and at 65 years old, had so much more to give. He died far too young and left behind so many adoring fans. Rest in Peace, my friend. I hope you are listening.

  1. Thank you for sharing your thoughts about Bob. I’m much older than you. My family and I watched Bob on Full and Fuller House, America’s Funniest Home Videos and stand up on Amazon.
All off us who love Bob Saget have difficulty coping with his death, it was so sudden. While being in pain I discovered the podcast Bob Saget’s Here for You. I hardly ever listen to podcasts but I’ve been listening to Bob every day. It is sweet and soothing and he is still with us. Take care Max
