Star Trek: The Motion Picture - The Director's Edition

The human adventure is just beginning again as Paramount announces the director’s edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture will be warping its way to us this August in cinemas and on Blu-ray in September!

Of all the films in the ‘Star Trek.’ franchise, I think I’ve watched ‘Star Trek: The Motion Picture’ the most. It isn’t the best movie of the franchise but it is highly enjoyable all the same. Ok, so it plays at times like a two-hour reunion episode of the original series. But who cares? The crew of the U.S.S Enterprise was back alongside a brand new, refitted Enterprise herself. Throw in an epic and astounding score from the master, Jerry Goldsmith and you have cinematic bliss. The film was rushed incomplete into cinemas back in 1979 which devalued the film somewhat. But thanks to director Robert Wise, he was allowed to go back to the film and recut it, upgrade the special effects and release ‘The Director’s Edition’ back in 2001.

This definitive version was roundly applauded by the fans and has gone on to become THE version of the film. The film is tighter, with lots of technobabble and pointless speeches consigned to the cutting room floor. Add in the new special effects and the film is a lot more fun. Until now, it has only been available on DVD or HD download. But this August sees the film coming to cinemas in its director’s edition ahead of September when the film will launch on 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray. In addition, a limited edition ‘Star Trek: The Motion Picture-The Director’s Edition-The Complete Adventure’ will be released. Pre-order yours here

THOUGHTS

This is the news I have been waiting to hear. The chance to own the director’s edition of ‘Star Trek: The Motion Picture’ in 4k Ultra HD is not one I intend to pass up. In fact, I have already preordered my copies. I have preordered the 5-disc ‘The Complete Adventure’ along with the Blu-ray edition as a standalone. For me, this is a must. But the news that both ‘The Motion Picture’ and ‘Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan (Director’s Cut)’ are coming to cinema screens later this year is the cherry on top of a rather large, enjoyable cake. As soon as tickets are available, I’ll be booking up for them both. Will you?
