Everybody loves Eddie Murphy but we didn’t get any new films from him last year. Thankfully, 2023 is changing that. His new film You People arrives on Netflix on January 27. I had the chance to watch it earlier this week.
STORY
You People tells the story of a new couple and their families. It explores the dynamics between them as they come from different backgrounds and have social expectations. It is a bit slow at first. After all, the first twenty minutes do set the plot. Though, once you get through that, it is where the fun begins. And when I say fun, it is entertaining. There are a lot of laugh-out-loud moments.
Ezra’s (played by Jonah Hill) family are White Jews while Amira’s (played by Lauren London) family are Black Muslims. And their parents clearly do not have the same vision of what they want for their children. In fact, they are both racists towards each other in their own ways. Imagine your weird uncle during family reunions except here, it’s not your uncle but your parents. You get the picture. And the best scenes are the ones when all the parents are together. Obviously, it is a collection of embarrassing situations with sharp humor. In some ways, the jokes do remind me of The Office‘s humor. With comedy, it is all about how you do it.
CAST
Moreover, as usual, Jonah Hill is good at comedy. But the real MVPs of this film are Eddie Murphy and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Indeed, they are hilarious as the embarrassing parents. David Duchovny is also quite funny. I just wish he had more screen time.
VISUALS & SOUNDTRACK
Furthermore, the transitions between scenes feel like it’s something coming out of a music video. I get that it is an artistic choice but I am not sure it fits a film. Especially since it does not bring anything to the next scene, it is just for the cool effect. Apart from that, the film is rather colorful.
Finally, this film has a good selection of songs ranging from R&B to rap and hip-hop. It fits with the atmosphere of the scenery.
VERDICT
You People is an entertaining comedy with sharp humor in which Eddie Murphy and Julia Louis-Dreyfus are the real MVPs.
