Official Film Chart - Black Adam Unleashes His Power

This week on The Official Film Chart, Michael Myers stalks for the final time, and we get to pick off The Menu, but the chart bows down to the power of Black Adam!

Welcome to The Official Film Chart.

THE CHART GETS A MAJOR SHAKE-UP!

Well, it was bound to happen. After having many of the same titles week after week, the chart has seen a significant change. This week, we see one new entry and four re-entries. And we have a new number one with one of them. To make way for these five titles, it is goodbye to The Croods: A New Age, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore, The Batman, and The Lovely Bones. So, the question is, what is the new official UK number-one title? It is time to bow down to the power of the new chart-topper as we take a stroll through the placings.

BLACK ADAM BATTLES HIS WAY TO THE TOP!

I said it would happen. And indeed it has. After coming off of premium retail and PVOD and hitting all the home entertainment formats, the new official UK chart-topper is Black Adam. The big-budget DC movie, starring Dwayne Johnson in the title role, has destroyed the competition to lay claim to the top spot. The film is a highly enjoyable and entertaining one that should have led to a franchise that would entertain us for years to come. Sadly, after James Gunn took charge of the DC film slate, it appears that the film is a one-and-done. With support from Pierce Brosnan as Dr. Fate, the film is perfect family entertainment that will have the youngsters rewatching it time and again.

HALLOWEEN ENDS AT NUMBER TWO!

My favorite movie serial killer returns to the chart in the second position after it was released on the disc formats. Slicing and dicing its way back into the chart is Halloween Ends. The final film in the Blumhouse trilogy once again sees Jamie Lee Curtis take on her arch nemesis Michael Myers one last time. Now, I’m one of the biggest fans of the Halloween franchise there is. But I have to admit that I found the film to be completely lacking. It should have been the film to top them all. Instead, it is a completely damp squib. And to make things worse, Michael Myers himself is reduced to a cameo in his own movie. One for completionists only, I’m afraid.

ELVIS ROCKS DOWN THE CHART!

After returning to the top spot last week, and despite being nominated for eight Oscars, the musical biopic Elvis can’t compete with the DCU or Michael Myers. The film, directed by Baz Luhrmann and featuring an Oscar-nominated performance by Austin Butler falls two positions to third place. Despite a ropey first hour, the film explodes into life and gives fans of the king of rock and roll a brilliant time. With terrific recreations of some of Elvis’ Las Vegas performances, the film is one that deserves to be in anyone’s collection.

THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN DROP A PLACE!

After securing Oscar nods for stars Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan, and Kerry Condon as well as writer-director Martin McDonagh, The Banshees Of Inisherin falls a place this week to fourth. The comedy-drama is one of the best-reviewed films of recent times. Farrell is excellent in the lead role while Gleeson matches him in every respect. I’m hoping the film will pick up some Oscars at the ceremony in March. But I can’t help but think that it will sadly miss out on the big ones when they are dished out.

MAVERICK’S ENGINES SUFFER A STALL!

We round out the week’s top five with Tom Cruise’s Oscar-nominated sequel Top Gun: Maverick. The film falls three places to this week’s number five. The movie, thirty-six years in hitting screens, is one of, if not the best-selling title in chart history. And it isn’t hard to see why. Fans of the original flocked back to the screen to relive their youths while the new generation couldn’t get enough of the film. With brilliant aerial sequence, loads of nostalgia, and a cracking storyline, the film soars.

BULLET TRAIN SPEEDS BACK INTO THE CHART!

Every Thursday on the streaming retail sites, we are offered a one-day-only selection of movies to buy at a reduced price. Last week saw Bullet Train retail for one day only for £4.99. And it has done wonders for the films’ fortunes. The Brad Pitt-led action comedy has sped back into the top ten, rising thirteen places to arrive at the number six chart station.

LYLE THE CROCODILE GETS A NASTY CHART BITE!

Falling three places to entertain the masses from the seventh spot is the wonderful family movie Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile. The movie, featuring Shawn Mendes as the singing voice of Lyle himself and Javier Bardem as his friend, is one that will keep young children happy and will have the parents laughing out loud at times.

THE DOMINION IS COMING TO AN END!

Dropping three places to roar weakly from the eighth position is franchise closer Jurassic World: Dominion. The film is the culmination of the Jurassic franchise that started back in 1993 with the original Jurassic Park. And sees the saga go out with a whimper rather than a large epic roar.

WE CAN FINALLY PICK SOMETHING OFF THE MENU!

Our only new entry of the week enters the chart in the ninth spot. Finally, after its digital release, pitch-black comedy-horror The Menu makes a lavish debut. With sterling performances from Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult, who star as a couple attending a star chef’s (Ralph Fiennes) invite-only restaurant, where things take a turn for the murderous. The film is wonderful. At times, it had me in stitches with its wickedly cruel humor and events. Although certainly not suitable for family viewing, the movie is one for adults after the kids are in bed.

A NEW ERA RETURNS AGAIN!

And finally, rising four places to return to the chart in the tenth and final position, we welcome back Downton Abbey: A New Era. The second big screen outing for the cast of the hit ITV drama has become a favorite amongst the buying public.

FINISHING OFF!

And that is it on the Official Film Chart for another week. January has flown past. Next Wednesday will see the first chart for February. Will Black Adam retain the top spot or will he be dethroned by something already in the chart or a shock new entry? Time will tell. But until next week…

Whatever you decide, whatever you buy, stay safe, be kind, look after each other, and happy viewing!
